When Jason Ayres and his wife Claire discussed what they would do after the birth of their first child, he had no doubts about the future. “I wanted to take a break from my career. I'm older than my wife – I was 37 then – and she didn't want to be a stay-at-home mum, because at 22 her career was only just beginning,” he said. [Excerpt from Oxford Mail interview, September 2013]. So for the past six years he has stayed at home looking after their sons Oliver, six, and Jamie, three. This book is a collection of humorous tales about life as a stay at home dad along with musings on various other topics he encounters in his daily life. From trying to track down the perfect buffet to nurturing an unhealthy obsession with crisps, the topics are many and varied. Whether readers are looking in particular for tales of the ups and downs of parenting small children, or just want some light-hearted easy reading humour, they will find plenty to entertain them here in over 300+ pages chronicling one year of the writer's life. This book is the first in a series of the "Stay At Home Dad" diaries. The second, "Austerity Dad", was released in July 2013. You can keep up with Jason's latest thoughts on the world of parenting via his weekly newspaper column "Stay At Home Dad" in the Oxford Mail (newspaper or online) or follow him on Twitter @AusterityDad.

Kings And Their Sons In Early Modern Europe written by Mark Konnert and has been published by Algora Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-01 with History categories.

Some of history's greatest dramas have unfolded in the stories of kings and their sons in early modern Europe; and their conflicts presaged in some ways today's tensions in family-run businesses. In several notorious cases, the kings despised their sons to the point of committing murder, thus killing their own heirs. Prof. Konnert shows that these tragic dramas actually represent an extreme of the normal state of affairs rather than unusual occurrences. They are different in degree, not kind. This book is the first to look at these episodes in a systematic and comparative fashion. The stories are moving in themselves, but viewed in their historical context, they illuminate aspects of a past society which has faded from view in the 21st century. Two of the most famous episodes?those of Frederick the Great of Prussia and his father, and of Peter the Great of Russia and his son?are examined here, as well as three less well-known cases. These episodes are put into historical context, and the family dynamics of these royal dynasties are discussed, showing not only how they differed from those of today but also from those of their more common contemporaries. These tensions are also compared to those that have emerged in family-run businesses, where conflicts between fathers and sons are also very common. Furthermore, when the interests of the dynastic enterprise, whether political or corporate, take precedence over family life and personal happiness, marriage practices can produce particularly toxic relations. The cases examined here are unusual only in the degree of hostility rather than in its existence.

My South Seas Sleeping Beauty is a captivating coming-of-age tale set in the magical jungles of Borneo. Told through the vivid recollections of a Chinese-Malay youth, the novel recounts the life of Su Qi, a troubled, sensitive son of a wealthy family, and exemplifies the imaginative range of one of Taiwan's most innovative writers. "There were all sorts of stories about how my younger sister died," Su Qi begins, hinting at the power of memory to bend and refract truth. Yet whichever the real story may be, the fact is that the death of Su Qi's sister created an irrevocable rift in Su Qi's family, driving his father into the arms of aboriginal women and his mother into a world of her own invention. In an effort to escape the oppression of home, Su Qi loses himself in the surrounding jungle, full of Communist guerillas and strange tropical fauna. The jungle further blurs the line between fantasy and reality for Su Qi, until he meets Chunxi, the beautiful, frail daughter of his father's best friend. Chunxi is an oasis of kindness and honesty in an otherwise cruel and evasive world, but after a bizarre accident, Chunxi falls into a deep coma, and Su Qui flees to Taiwan. In college Su Qi meets Keyi, a vivacious siren who helps Su Qi forget not only his violent past but also the colorful tales of his youth. When a family member dies, however, Su Qi is pulled back to the jungles of Borneo where he begins to unravel the secrets of his family's past-a story stranger than any fairy tale-and learns that his cherished dream of awakening his beloved Chunxi may be more than just a fantasy. Influenced by the lyricism of William Faulkner and the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, My South Seas Sleeping Beauty is a deeply evocative exploration of sexuality and identity and a masterful reworking of Chinese and Western myth. Valerie Jaffee's careful translation retains all the tone and detail of the original work and provides rare access to a new and exciting generation of Chinese writers born in Southeast Asia.

The Wisdom Of Bees written by Michael O'Malley and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-13 with Business & Economics categories.

"It seemed to me that the bees were working on the very same kinds of problems we are trying to solve. How can large, diverse groups work together harmoniously and productively? Perhaps we could take what the bees do so well and apply it to our institutions." When Michael O'Malley first took up beekeeping, he thought it would be a nice hobby to share with his ten-year-old son. But as he started to observe these industrious insects, he noticed that they do a lot more than just make honey. Bees not only work together to achieve a common goal but, in the process, create a highly coordinated, efficient, and remarkably productive organization. The hive behaved like a miniature but incredibly successful business. O'Malley also realized that bees can actually teach managers a lot about how to run their organizations. He identified twenty-five powerful insights, such as: * Distribute authority: the queen bee delegates relentlessly, and worker bees make daily decisions based on local cues and requirements. * Keep it simple: bees exchange only relevant information, operate under clear standards, and use straightforward measures and feedback to guide their actions. * Protect the future: when a lucrative vein of nectar is discovered, the entire colony doesn't rush off to mine it, no matter how enriching the short- term benefits. Blending practical advice with interesting facts about the hive, The Wisdom of Bees is a useful and entertaining guide for any manager looking to get the most out of his or her organization.
