Die Frage nach dem Wandel geschichtlicher Zeitlichkeit in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren bestimmt das erkenntnisleitende Interesse des Bandes. Ihm liegt die These zugrunde, dass die Transformation der vorherrschenden Verständnisse von Zukunft, Gegenwart und Vergangenheit sowie von Fortschritt und Geschichte Indikator aber auch Faktor der tiefgreifenden sozioökonomischen und politischen Wandlungsprozesse nach dem Boom ist. An die Stelle von Fortschritt, Aufbruch und Machbarkeitsglaube traten in weiten Teilen der westlichen Gesellschaften apokalyptische Visionen atomarer und ökologischer Katastrophen sowie eine Diskreditierung von Utopien und teleologischem Denken. Die »offene Zukunft«, die sich zu Beginn der Neuzeit aufgetan hatte, schien sich zu schließen und wurde zu einer Projektionsfläche für Bedrohungen, die es, so überhaupt noch möglich, zu verhindern galt. Dementsprechend verschoben sich auch die Deutungen von Gegenwart und Vergangenheit. Nebst einer traumatischen Vergangenheit, die nicht vergehen wollte, erinnerte man sich diverser nützlich-nostalgischer Vergangenheiten. Angesichts der rasanten Auflösung zahlreicher Selbstverständlichkeiten der Industriemoderne stifteten sie die Orientierung, welche die Gegenwart nicht liefern konnte. Ein beredtes Beispiel hierfür ist die Flut an Postismen, mit deren Hilfe sich die Zeitgenossen zu verorten versuchten. Gerade die Konjunktur der Selbstbeschreibungen Postmoderne und Posthistoire zeugt nicht nur davon, dass die Zeitgenossen einen Bruch mit längerfristigen Strukturen diagnostizierten, sondern dass es im Kern um die Fragen von Zeit und Geschichte ging.

A Stage for Debate presents a detailed analysis of the repertoire of the leading German-language stage of the nineteenth century, Vienna’s Burgtheater. The book explores the extent to which the Burgtheater repertoire contributed to important political and cultural debates on individual liberty, the role of women in society, and the understanding of national and regional identity. The relevance of the Burgtheater as a forum for political debate is assessed not by the degree to which the performed plays transgressed established norms, but by the range of positions that were voiced on a given topic. Martin Wagner investigates the roughly 1,000 plays from across Europe that were introduced to the Burgtheater’s repertoire between 1814 and 1867 by combining a general overview with detailed interpretations of especially successful plays. Wagner reveals that the Burgtheater was significantly more involved in contemporary debates than the stereotype of this stage as an artistically refined but apolitical institution suggests. Drawing from theatre studies and German and Austrian studies more broadly, A Stage for Debate revises the history of one of Europe’s leading theatres.

AfD-Wähler*innen reagieren nicht mit nostalgischer Vergangenheitsorientierung, sondern mit Endzeitdystopien und Kairos. Das macht den Rechtspopulismus zu einer Bedrohung für die Demokratie: Weil er Symptom einer Zeitkrise unserer Gegenwartsgesellschaft ist, gelingt es ihm trotz oder gerade wegen seiner destruktiven, postfaktischen und konzeptarmen Aufstellung erfolgreich zu sein.

Der Strukturwandel ließ nicht nur die soziale und wirtschaftliche Zukunft des Ruhrgebiets ungewiss werden, sondern stellte die Region als solche in Frage, da sie sich nicht durch naturräumliche, politische oder administrative Grenzen definierte, sondern über die wirtschaftliche Prägung durch Kohle und Stahl. Die Studie untersucht, inwiefern geschichtskulturelle Maßnahmen, die mit der wertschätzenden Erhaltung montanindustrieller Produktionsstandorte als Zeugnisse der Industriekultur begannen und im Kulturhauptstadtjahr 2010 gipfelten, als Reaktion auf die unsicher gewordene Zukunft der Region zu verstehen sind. Sie legt damit ein Konzept zur Analyse von Geschichtskultur als sozialem Feld vor, das neben der geschichtskulturellen Entwicklung des Ruhrgebiets im Speziellen auch Fragen zur Historisierung des Geschichtsbooms seit den 1970er Jahren im Allgemeinen adressiert.

The Nazi conscience is not an oxymoron. In fact, the perpetrators of genocide had a powerful sense of right and wrong, based on civic values that exalted the moral righteousness of the ethnic community and denounced outsiders. Claudia Koonz's latest work reveals how racial popularizers developed the infrastructure and rationale for genocide during the so-called normal years before World War II. Her careful reading of the voluminous Nazi writings on race traces the transformation of longtime Nazis' vulgar anti-Semitism into a racial ideology that seemed credible to the vast majority of ordinary Germans who never joined the Nazi Party. Challenging conventional assumptions about Hitler, Koonz locates the source of his charisma not in his summons to hate, but in his appeal to the collective virtue of his people, the Volk. From 1933 to 1939, Nazi public culture was saturated with a blend of racial fear and ethnic pride that Koonz calls ethnic fundamentalism. Ordinary Germans were prepared for wartime atrocities by racial concepts widely disseminated in media not perceived as political: academic research, documentary films, mass-market magazines, racial hygiene and art exhibits, slide lectures, textbooks, and humor. By showing how Germans learned to countenance the everyday persecution of fellow citizens labeled as alien, Koonz makes a major contribution to our understanding of the Holocaust. The Nazi Conscience chronicles the chilling saga of a modern state so powerful that it extinguished neighborliness, respect, and, ultimately, compassion for all those banished from the ethnic majority.

The Future of the World is devoted to the intriguing field of study which emerged after World War Two, futurism or futurology. Jenny Andersson explains how futurist scholars and researchers imagined the Cold War and post Cold War world and the tools and methods they would use to influence and change that world. Futurists were a motley crew of Cold War warriors, nuclear scientists, journalists, and peace activists. Some argued it should be a closed sphere of science defined by delimited probabilities. They were challenged by alternative notions of the future as a potentially open realm. Futurism also drew on an eclectic range of repertoires, some of which were deduced from positivist social science, mathematics, and nuclear physics, and some of which sprung from alternative forms of knowledge in science fiction, journalism, or religion. These different forms of prediction laid very different claims to how accurately futures could be known, and what kind of control could be exerted over what was yet to come. The Future of the World carefully examines these different engagements with the future, and inscribes them in the intellectual history of the post war period. Using unexplored archival collections, The Future of the World reconstructs the Cold War networks of futurologists and futurists.
