His anecdote on the London Metropolitan Police’s handling of a noise complaint at an after-show all-star jam is particularly funny: “These guys (the Met) were cheerful, they dealt with the situation and didn’t escalate the problem when there wasn’t one. 10/10” ‘Outros’ cover Nigel’s thoughts on classical music today - fascinating reading from the perspective of a virtuoso - to Brexit, where the spelling of the word alone leaves the reader in little doubt as to which side of the fence the author sits. ‘Encores’ is a comprehensive section on Nigel’s recorded output, covering his early classical work, the Four Seasons and later albums. There are insights into his work with rock musicians including Robert Plant, the late drummer Michael Lee, Killing Joke singer Jaz Coleman, and producers Eddie Kramer (Jimmy Hendrix) and John Leckie (Stone Roses). Nigel’s writing on Gershwin, Yehudi Menuhin, Stephan Grappelli (‘my biggest inspiration’), Jimi Hendrix and the Doors is compelling. Nigel writes of his interests outside music - boxing and football - which provide inspiration and balance to his creative output (on Aston Villa - “a true blessing for me to have an outlet in which I was surrounded by normal, honest, hard-working people who did ‘proper jobs’”). There is a splendid chapter on ‘Kitchen Golf’, a not-without-risk variation of the game, conjured up with close friend and mischief-maker Gary Lineker, during a messy late night kitchen session. “My whole life has been spent breaking down barriers between people and this book is proof of that.” states Nigel in his ‘Warning’. It’s a Mission Statement borne out in ‘Uncensored’ with aplomb.

Fußballvereine gelten als Symbole der Zugehörigkeit und Rivalität. Was aber liegt der Zuordnung zu einer bestimmten Fangemeinschaft zu Grunde, wie wird ein Mensch zum Fan eines bestimmten Vereins? Diese Fragen werden hier anhand des Beispiels der Fans vom HSV und St. Pauli thematisiert. Für deutsche Verhältnisse ist die Rivalität zweier Profi-Clubs in einer Stadt ein seltenes Phänomen. Zudem hat die Fangemeinschaft des FC St. Pauli seit den 1980er Jahren in ihrer Außenwirkung eine besondere Stellung eingenommen. Deshalb bieten sich diese Vereine geradezu an, um die in der Fan-Soziologie meist nur am Rande dargestellten Themen der Herkunft der Fans und ihrer Sozialstruktur zu erforschen. Grundlage der Analyse ist die Frage nach der Sozialisation. Demnach nehmen Faktoren wie Erziehung und sozialstrukturelle Bedingungen Einfluss auf die Beziehung des Fans zum Fanobjekt. Ausgewertet wurden Selbstdarstellungen der Fans, proto-wissenschaftliche und journalistische Artikel sowie wissenschaftliche Texte. Als Resultat werden Thesen über Unterschiede auf den Dimensionen der Identitätsbildung, politischen Überzeugung, regionalen Herkunft, Einkommen und Bildungsniveau der Fangemeinschaften begründet.

Ab und zu werden Träume auch wahr. Wer Fan des FC St. Pauli ist, kennt das Problem. Meistens ist in einer Saison die Hinrunde gut und die Rückrunde nicht so prickelnd oder es ist genau umgekehrt. Aber dann kam doch mal alles ganz anders. Nach dem grandiosen Fußballjahr 2023 folgte in 2024 eine gute bis sehr gute Rückrunde. The intention of the book is to highlight the development of a type of football organisation that falls outside of the well documented elite professional game, the most recognizable face of the sport. Specifically, the focus here will fall upon community based football clubs which have grown out of the grassroots game. Well known examples of these clubs in Britain are the Bristol organisation, Easton Cowboys and Cowgirls, and the Leeds based Republica Internationale – both of these clubs have forged links with similarly motivated organisations in other countries who regularly come together in tournaments to express solidarity. Collectively, these clubs have sometimes been referred to as forming a ‘DIY culture’ in football. Their defining characteristics being variously described as anti-commercial, democratically constituted, advocating social responsibility and inclusiveness, and holding an outlook of solidarity that, in some cases, involves political education.
