From trilobites near the Idaho border and primitive horses on the Columbia Plateau to giant bird tracks near Bellingham and curious bear-like beasts on the Olympic Peninsula, fossils across Washington State are filled with clues of past life on Earth. With abundant and well-exposed rock layers, the state has fossils dating from Ice Age mammals only 12,000 years old back to marine invertebrates more than 500 million years old. In Spirit Whales and Sloth Tales, renowned paleontologist Elizabeth A. Nesbitt teams up with popular science writer David B. Williams to offer a fascinating, richly illustrated tour through more than a half billion years of natural history. Following an introduction to key concepts, twenty-four profiles—each featuring a unique plant, animal, or environment—tell the incredible stories of individual fossils, many of which are on display in Washington museums. The spectacular paleontology of Washington is brought to life with details of the fossils' discovery and extraction, their place in geological time, and the insights they provide into contemporary issues like climate change and species extinction.

"Numerous discoveries of extinct species of animals have been made within the Columbia Basin physiographic province of the Pacific Northwest, including on lands presently included in Washington state. Three notable nineteenth-century excavations were undertaken during the 1870s in an eastern portion of former Washington Territory upon the discovery of extinct species. All excavations yielded Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) and/or bison (Bison bison or Bison antiquus) remains and artifacts. The environments of the discovery sites were all natural springs. Following excavation, some of the fossils were promoted on the Pacific Coast prior to entering curatorial care in university or natural history museum settings. Two twentieth-century excavations were carried out at one find locale, the Coplen Spring near Latah, Washington. A contemporary study indicates that fossils from the Coplen Spring were recovered below tephra from the Mazama climactic eruption (circa 6850 years before present). Historical accounts, primary excavation records, letters, and photographs were used to reconstruct the histories of the individual specimen collections. Review of these data sources indicates that the vicinity of each spring which produced these fossils yet retains an archaeological-paleontological potential"--Document.

Excerpt from Tertiary Faunal Horizons of Western Washington During the last eight years detailed studies have been made by the writer in those areas where formations of Tertiary age are exposed. The stratigraphic relations have been determined wherever possible. An especial effort has been put forth to make extensive collections of fossils and in every case to record exactly where these collections occur within the stratigraphic sections. Among the more recent collections from the lower Oligocene formations many news species occur and are described in this report. A list of localities at which Tertiary fossils have been collected is included as well as faunal lists of all species within the Tertiary of western Washington.
