In the first chapter of Foster Care: Global Issues, Challenges and Perspectives of the 21st Century, the authors explore modern research regarding children of foster parents around the world, including an overview of literature and the use of an online virtual platform to connect the fostering community. Experts from Canada, the United States, Ireland, Sweden, Australia, and the United Kingdom offered up their knowledge on children of foster parents as well as recommendations for the well-being of said children. Next, a study exploring the implementation of a kinship search program in a child welfare agency is presented in order to determine its benefits. The authors conclude that Kinship Researchers are generally perceived as respectful, helpful, beneficial, and valuable. Additionally, child welfare policy is examined. Later, the essential practice of traditional kinship foster care in Ghana is explored, including current legal provisions, public perception, potential challenges, and future recommendations. The authors also discuss the phenomenon of runaway youth in the foster care system. Due to the fact that children in the foster care system are twice as likely to display runaway indicators than those in the general population, this is a significant issue that warrants understanding. A description of running away in the foster care system is rendered, along with the ramifications that may occur for on-the-run youth. The next chapter deliberates on a study regarding children in out-of-home care in South Korea, comparing the service status of different placement types in terms of developmental outcomes of the children. The results indicate that children in foster care thought of their caregivers and environments more positively than those in institutional care over a period of two years. The following chapter discusses a variety of federal and state laws that address children who were abused and consequently served by the child welfare system. The authors use case studies of foster youth to demonstrate how the law has been used to secure the services, support, and resources needed to place foster youth on a pathway to a more positive future. The final chapter outlines an approach known as, Watch me Play! which encourages supported child-led play in acknowledgement of extensive training needs in the social care workforce. The authors also discuss the potential impact of exploratory and symbolic play to child development, attachment, and communication.

"In this detailed exploration of the foster care system, Betsy Krebs and Paul Pitcoff argue that the existing system sets teens up to fail by inadequately preparing them for adult life. They contend that the primary goal of foster care for teenagers should be preparation for a fully productive adult life, and that current policies and practice are misguided." "Beyond the Foster Care System follows both Krebs and Pitcoff's journey through foster care and the stories of teens themselves. The book demonstrates that alternatives to the standard way of providing foster care are not only imaginable, but possible."--BOOK JACKET.

Research on youth aging out of foster care is limited and rarely focuses on their outcomes in life. Not only are these youths starting out at a disadvantage without a stable home life or clear sources of support compared to other youth their age, they are also less likely to be employed and more likely to suffer from emotional disorders, only worsening their living conditions and potentially their outcomes in life. The present study explored the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and employment status of these youths and also explored a potential mediation role for social support on this relationship. The sample studied were 50 young adults who have aged out of foster care or have been homeless prior to reaching adulthood. Those young adults who had more PTSD symptoms were expected to have low rates of employment. Social support was expected to buffer this link between PTSD and employment status. These hypotheses were tested using self-reported PTSD symptomology (PCL-5), perceived social support (MSPSS), and employment status at the time of the interview. Although the hypotheses were not supported, individual facets of social support were found to negatively correlate with PTSD symptoms. The results of this study may be useful for developing interventions for these youth.

The issue of foster children aging out of care and services has been an issue for quite some time. There are many concerns related to their care and needs. While in the foster care system, services and programs are typically tailored to help support these children and get them to 18 years old. College is often available and paid for to help those aging out of foster care, but what happens to those who do not take that path? College can be stressful and challenging for students with a strong support system. Those aging out of foster care often have limited support systems. These individuals encounter many challenges in their life, and it impacts them personally as well as economically. Acknowledgment of the needs of individuals aging out of foster care and entering the adult world is a tremendous issue that must be addressed. This paper aims to explore the needs of these individuals by looking at current programs implemented to help with entering the world. Additionally, exploring new programs to help give nearing and former aging out foster children a better opportunity to learn skills that can aid them personally and professionally in the real world. By understanding the foster care system’s inner workings, the research aims to elicit an understanding of the issues that have been dealt with and showcase emerging issues that threaten the futures of current foster children. There have been increasing numbers of incarcerated foster children, becoming addicts, and unemployed over the years due to a lack of programs to help them before, during, and after they age out. New strategies and programs must be implemented to prepare them for this life adjustment. Ultimately, this will allow them to gain skills, confidence, support, and the tools to help them build a successful future for themselves.
