In this culmination of his search for anthropological concepts and practices appropriate to the twenty-first century, Paul Rabinow contends that to make sense of the contemporary anthropologists must invent new forms of inquiry. He begins with an extended rumination on what he gained from two of his formative mentors: Michel Foucault and Clifford Geertz. Reflecting on their lives as teachers and thinkers, as well as human beings, he poses questions about their critical limitations, unfulfilled hopes, and the lessons he learned from and with them. This spirit of collaboration animates The Accompaniment, as Rabinow assesses the last ten years of his career, largely spent engaging in a series of intensive experiments in collaborative research and often focused on cutting-edge work in synthetic biology. He candidly details the successes and failures of shifting his teaching practice away from individual projects, placing greater emphasis on participation over observation in research, and designing and using websites as a venue for collaboration. Analyzing these endeavors alongside his efforts to apply an anthropological lens to the natural sciences, Rabinow lays the foundation for an ethically grounded anthropology ready and able to face the challenges of our contemporary world.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Ethnologie / Volkskunde, Note: 1,0, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universitat Frankfurt am Main (Institut fur Ethnologie), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In dieser Hausarbeit mochte ich untersuchen, inwieweit Foucaults Werk tatsachlich grundsatzliche theoretische Denkansatze in der Ethnologie beeinflusst hat. Dass Michel Foucault geradezu dauerprasent und fast unbestritten relevant fur die Ethnologie bleibt, liegt wohl vor allem an der Vielfaltigkeit und regelrecht universellen Anwendbarkeit seiner zahlreichen Ansatze. Von Foucault gepragte Begriffe und Konzepte wie Biopolitik, Disziplin, Diskurs, Macht und Governementalitat finden sich in derart vielen ethnologischen Veroffentlichungen, dass Barbara Birkhan von einem unverkennbaren "Foucault-Hype" spricht. Trotzdem, so merkt sie an, werden Foucaults Ansatze bei einem Groteil der Bezugnahmen nur unzureichend in den wissenschaftshistorischen Kontext gesetzt, in dem sie stehen. Weder wird deren Einbindung in Foucaults Gesamtwerk noch in die dazugehorigen Stromungen der Postmoderne bzw. des Poststrukturalismus tiefergehend reflektiert. Eher greifen sich Autoren einzelne seiner Konzepte recht wahllos heraus und nutzen diese nur oberflachlich. Zusatzlich bleibt Foucault fur ethnologische Autoren vor allem der auerhalb der eigenen Disziplin stehende Philosoph, an dessen Werk sich inspiriert wird, dessen Eigenzuschreibung als Ethnologe der eigenen Gesellschaft jedoch weitestgehend vernachlassigt wird. Ausgehend von dieser Kritik lohnt es sich, die eigentlichen Grundlagen der immer noch so relevanten Beziehung zwischen Foucault und Ethnologie neu in den Blick zu nehmen.

Hegel und Foucault, in der Forschung meist als Antipoden dargestellt, stellen beide die Frage nach der Geschichtlichkeit des Wissens. Die Studie erarbeitet diese These anhand eines Vergleichs der Phänomenologie des Geistes mit der Archäologie des Wissens: Vollzieht Foucaults diskursive Analytik der Historizität des Wissens tatsächlich einen vollständigen Bruch mit Hegels Konzeption der Geschichtlichkeit des Geistes oder bleibt sie ihr formal, inhaltlich oder konzeptuell verpflichtet? Es wird dargelegt, inwiefern beide Konzeptionen kritisch auf Kants Vernunftkritik bezogen sind und in welchen Hinsichten sich ihre Theorien der Wissensentwicklung annähern. Inhaltlich werden Schnittstellen zwischen der phänomenologischen und der archäologischen Darstellung der Wissenskonstellation um 1800 herausgestellt. Im Resultat entsteht ein differenziertes Bild beider Denker im Rahmen einer historisch-systematischen Wissensforschung.
