Excerpt from Foundations of Structures In foundation work the engineer must use rocks and soil as structural materials. He realizes that the planning of'the superstructure should be based upon the characteristics of the materials of which it is to be built, and he may select and use the materials that will best serve his purpose. On the other hand, in planning the substructure, he must use whatever soils are already there, or he must devise ways to improve the situation in the interests of safety and suitable economy. Excerpt from The Design of Masonry Structures and Foundations Due to investigations, both analytical and experimental, that have been made in recent years of the properties of masonry materials, the forces to which masonry structures are subjected, and the behavior of such structures, masonry design and construction have largely passed from the status of an art to that of a science, much as did bridge design after the invention of methods for calculating stresses in truss members. The extensive use of concrete with the studies that have been made to improve its quality and to secure economy in its use, and the development of reinforced concrete, a masonry material capable of sustaining tensile strains and requiring a stress analysis in order to proportion the steel, have contributed largely to this changed status in the design of masonry structures. This scientific understanding of masonry design has widened the use of masonry to include many structures for which other materials formerly were used exclusively, although for the most part, notwithstanding their diversity, these structures can be grouped about a comparatively few representative types. The soft and pleasing hues and outlines of masonry structures as well as their durability have appealed to builders from time immemorial, and masonry still offers the best means of building artistically and strongly with the economy that results from permanence. Moreover, there is an increasing demand in the design of engineering structures to secure not only stability and economy but something of elegance, grace and beauty in addition. Since good architectural treatment can be secured with but slight if any increase in the cost, it is appropriate that this phase of design should be given special attention in planning masonry structures. The present volume was prepared with a view to furnishing a textbook embodying these ideas. An attempt has been made to offer a mode of analyzing forces and calculating resulting stresses and to indicate an acceptable method of design. Excerpt from Foundations for Tall Buildings Foundation construction for tall buildings in both Chicago and New York has undergone rapid changes in the last decade. These changes are due to the increased loads on the clay upon which the structures rested before the method of deep foundations to bed-rock came into use. The clay stata underlying the prairie soil of Chicago changes materially even in short distances. In general, however, there are six to twelve feet of loam and quick-sand, followed by a layer of clay, which is hard and firm in some places, while in others it is so soft and wet that it may readily be taken out with a spade. In the business districts of Chicago where all the great business blocks are located, the clay, often mixed with a strata of quick-sand, reaches down from forty to eighty feet to a limestone foundation. If there are any hard-pan layers within the reach of ordinary piles, there seems to be no indications that they are uniform, or at all to be relied upon. In New York, the average depth to bed-rock is about thirty-five feet. Throughout the island, there is a decided variance in the depths to bed-rock. In the New York Stock Exchange Building it was found necessary to go sixty feet below the curb line, while in the Siegel and Cooper Building, at one end, bed-rock was found at a distance of only twelve feet below the street grade. The general character of the material from the surface to bed rock, is; (a) the surface ground, or made ground; (b) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Foundations of Bridges and Buildings In preparing this volume the aim of the authors has been to treat in a systematic manner the entire subject of foundations for bridges and buildings as represented by American engineering practice. Only occasional references are made to foreign practice. It was hoped, at first, to accomplish this task within the limits of about 300 pages, but as the work progressed it became evident that this could not be done without abbreviating the treatment of many topics so much as to become unsatisfactory. In many cases, space has been economized by inserting additional illustrations and reducing descriptions in the text. A large proportion of space is devoted to piles and pile driving, since young engineers are more likely to obtain their early experience with pile foundations than with any other class of foundation construction. Many facts derived from experience are given to emphasize and illustrate the application of fundamental principles and to form a rational basis for that kind of judgment which is such an important element in an engineers professional practice. The undesirable features of considerable pile driving in this country have been due as much to the assumption that the art of pile driving is so simple that the aid of science is not essential, as to the attempt of some engineers to base the art upon theoretical rules which fail to take into account many practical factors of the problem. Another reason for extending the treatment is due to the recent introduction of concrete piles which will help to retain the dominant place that pile foundations have held heretofore among other classes of foundations. The attention of engineering teachers is called to the arrangement of the topics in the first five chapters. Excerpt from Foundations This essay, from the pen of an eminent continental engineer, was presented, after translation into English, to the Institution of Civil Engineers of Great Britain by L. F. Vernom Harcourt, M.I.C.E. It was reprinted from the "Proceedings" of the Institution in Van Nostrand's Magazine, Vol. XVIII. The importance of the subject and the eminence of the author justify the belief that, in the compact from of the Science Series, it will be an acceptable addition to engineering literature. Excerpt from Materials of Engineering, Vol. 1 of 3 Of masonry. Their principal value to him is for use in foundations, and in structures protecting his machinery. Of the stones, but few are well adapted to his purpose. Using them in foundations, he requires them to be strong and dense, hard and durable; and the mortars and cements used to bind them should be Of the best possible quality. A foundation intended to bear the shock and tremor of moving machinery must, necessarily, be more carefully built, and must be constructed Of more carefully selected materials than a foundation carrying a load at rest. The civil engineer makes frequent use Of all the materials Of masonry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Structural Engineering Whilst admitting that the success of the design of an engineer ing structure largely depends upon the sound judgment of the engineer, such judgment must be founded on the basis of the fundamental principles of statics - the ignoring of which would lead to waste or possible disaster. This treatise may be taken as an attempt to set forth these fundamental principles. The author has to thank Professor W. C. Unwin, for suggestions after reading over the proofs. Excerpt from Experience and Prediction: An Analysis of the Foundations and the Structure of Knowledge The conviction that the key to an understanding of sci entific method is contained within the probability problem grew stronger and stronger with me in the face of such basic mistakes. This is the reason why, for a long time, I renounced a comprehensive report of my epistemological views, although my special investigations into different problems of epistemology demanded a construction of foundations different from those constructed by some of my philosophical friends. I concentrated my inquiry on the problem of probability which demanded at the same time a mathematical and a logical analysis. It is only after having traced out a logistic theory of probability, includ ing a solution of the problem of induction, that I turn now to an application of these ideas to questions of a more gen eral epistemological character. As my theory of probabil ity has been published for some years, it was not necessary to present it with all mathematical details once more in the present book; the fifth chapter, however, gives an ah breviated report of this theory - a report which seemed necessary as the probability book has been published in German only. Excerpt from Theory of Structures The practical design of structures involves so much outside of what may reasonably be called theory that it can only be thoroughly learned in the drawing office, but a few examples have been included to illustrate the application of the theory to practice.
