In the last few decades, we have developed a substantial body of knowledge about CEO succession. However, none of the past studies of succession has examined the very first succession event in a firm, when the Founder-CEO is replaced. There are at least four critical differences between later-stage succession and Founder-CEO succession: the higher level of attachment between Founder-CEOs and the firms they create, the much larger equity holdings of Founder-CEOs (which give them much more control of the firm), the fact that many Founder-CEOs remain in the firm (even though it is being run by their successors), and the fact that nearly all early-stage succession events involve outside successors (in contrast to later-stage succession, which has focused on the insider-outsider distinction). These differences make it hard to extrapolate from later-stage succession findings to Founder-CEO succession. Therefore, in order to examine Founder-CEO succession, I used field research and grounded-theory building to study the factors that should affect Founder-CEO succession in Internet start-ups. I find that there are two central inter-temporal events that may affect Founder-CEO succession: the completion of product development and the raising of each round of financing from outside investors. I develop testable hypotheses about how each of these events affect the rate of succession, and then test these hypotheses using an event-history analysis of a unique dataset containing the succession histories of 202 Internet firms. My findings point to several central "paradoxes of success," in which the Founder-CEO's success at achieving critical milestones actually causes the chance of Founder-CEO succession to rise dramatically.

The issues addressed in this study are: What internal factors support changes in the international operations of new firms? and What effect do these changes have on the firm's structure, control system, and market performance. To answer these questions, this work examines the internal resources and market performance of a set of publicly traded biotechnology firms. Findings support the view that new firms can enter international markets through a variety of strategies, including international joint ventures and subsidiaries. Changes in international operations also are found to enhance firm market performance when accompanied by changes in firm structure and control systems. However, managers must be patient because market performance only improves significantly two years after these organizational changes have taken place.

We examine the relationship between the intellectual capital of scientists making frontier discoveries, the presence of great university bioscience programs, the presence of venture capital firms, other economic variables, and the founding of U.S. biotechnology enterprises during 1976-1989. Using a linked cross-section/time- series panel data set, we find that the timing and location of the birth of biotech enterprises is determined primarily by intellectual capital measures, particularly the local number of highly productive 'star' scientists actively publishing genetic sequence discoveries. Great universities are likely to grow and recruit star scientists, but their effect is separable from the universities. When the intellectual capital measures are included in our poisson regressions, the number of venture capital firms in an area reduces the probability of foundings. At least early in the process, star scientists appear to be the scarce, immobile factors of production. Our focus on intellectual capital is related to knowledge spillovers, but in this case 'natural excludability' permits capture of supranormal returns by scientists. Given this reward structure technology transfer was vigorous without any special intermediating structures. We believe biotechnology may be prototypical of the birth patterns in other innovative industries.
