In Four Decades On, historians, anthropologists, and literary critics examine the legacies of the Second Indochina War, or what most Americans call the Vietnam War, nearly forty years after the United States finally left Vietnam. They address matters such as the daunting tasks facing the Vietnamese at the war's end—including rebuilding a nation and consolidating a socialist revolution while fending off China and the Khmer Rouge—and "the Vietnam syndrome," the cynical, frustrated, and pessimistic sense that colored America's views of the rest of the world after its humiliating defeat in Vietnam. The contributors provide unexpected perspectives on Agent Orange, the POW/MIA controversies, the commercial trade relationship between the United States and Vietnam, and representations of the war and its aftermath produced by artists, particularly writers. They show how the war has continued to affect not only international relations but also the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. Most of the contributors take up matters in the United States, Vietnam, or both nations, while several utilize transnational analytic frameworks, recognizing that the war's legacies shape and are shaped by dynamics that transcend the two countries. Four Decades Of Scientific Explanation written by Wesley C. Salmon and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-15 with Philosophy categories.

As Aristotle stated, scientific explanation is based on deductive argument-yet, Wesley C. Salmon points out, not all deductive arguments are qualified explanations. The validity of the explanation must itself be examined. Four Decades of Scientific Explanation provides a comprehensive account of the developments in scientific explanation that transpired in the last four decades of the twentieth century. It continues to stand as the most comprehensive treatment of the writings on the subject during these years.Building on the historic 1948 essay by Carl G. Hempel and Paul Oppenheim, "Studies in the Logic of Explanation," which introduced the deductive-nomological (D-N) model on which most work on scientific explanation was based for the following four decades, Salmon goes beyond this model's inherent basis of describing empirical knowledge to tells us "not only what, but also why." Salmon examines the predominant models in chronological order and describes their development, refinement, and criticism or rejection.Four Decades of Scientific Explanation underscores the need for a consensus of approach and ongoing evaluations of methodology in scientific explanation, with the goal of providing a better understanding of natural phenomena.

A number of the stories in Glenn Meeters Stories of Four Decades have been reprinted (most frequently Hard Row and A Harvest), but they all made their first appearance in publications as diverse as The Atlantic Monthly, Redbook, Epoch, The Literary Review, and The Reformed Journal. Each story has its own individual appeal. Each has its own style, theme, mood, its own plot and setting, and its own cast of characters who come fully to life only within its boundaries. Even Peter Heitz, in "The Oppressor," has different problems and preoccupations from the slightly older character with the same name in "The Convert." But set with others in a collection that touches major points in lifestories of Youth followed by those of Marriage and Parenthood and finally New Journeyseach story takes on new dimensions. Together they form a tableau of life in the American Midwest (and California, a mid-century Mecca for Midwesterners) from the forties through the seventies. One thinks of the slow clank clank of tire chains on smalltown winter streets in the first story; the visitors to Grandmothers house paying Chicago tolls in the last; and, in between, Los Angeles freeways and South Dakota gravel roads. Another dimension is as ancient as Joseph in Egypt: the clash of rural and village culture with urban modernity. Some characters need to break away from the village culture (faith, family, community); some lose it and re-create it. Some seek it out. All need to re-interpret it. And all struggle to maintain and pass on some aspects of that culture, if only the awed thankfulness of the traveler in A Harvest, who exclaims about his own journey, but my God what a delight, just to travel through!

Every human is born with a soul that tends to human pain. It's natural. But also natural is to lose it in the process of "growing up". We ignore where we came from and where we are marching to in this fleeting journey. Focused on our selfish motive we do not care about the damage we have done to our universe. Four Decades and a Poem is deeply human and reminds people of this missing factor, taking you through a trail of emotions. Written in various forms, old and contemporary, the book teaches you that there is more to life than just living. This is not about preaching or asking for unwanted change. As a city dweller, I am of the understanding that we are legally bound by social, cultural and political rights and yet of the knowledge that nothing can take our right to be human and no one, the right to steal that of another. Then, no change is needed. Included are topics on child abuse, girl child, alcoholism and youth issues besides others that call you to make your own decision and fathom the depth of your soul.

In the introduction, we get a glimpse of her educational foundation and the role that her family and upbringing played in preparing her for the future. Afterward, it tells of her experiences as a member of the pioneer dental class at the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria and the different challenges that accompanied being one of the first in the field of dentistry at that institution. Furthermore, being a pioneer at Ibadan provided her with opportunities for graduate dental education at the University of Michigan where she trained as an orthodontist with the Staff Development Scholarship from her alma mater. In return, the diverse experiences she has had as an orthodontist have presented her with a myriad of memorable opportunities. Indeed, capturing the memories of forty years after dental school has been a release of the intriguing maze, the diverse and ranging experiences she has navigated in the 40 years after dental school. On another note, her venture into dental public health appeared to have been born out of the uncertainty she faced during part of her orthodontic journey. However, it has proven to be non-accidental but, part of her mission to help increase access to dental care for those who cannot afford it. Primarily, the purpose of this memoir is to share her life with her progeny, other people who have influenced her professional development, and those who may wish to know a little more about her. Ultimately, it is a testimony to the goodness of God to her.
