The story begins among the stark white ice floes on the shore of the Sea of Okhotsk, as male and female come together to start a family amid the icy winter winds blowing down from Siberia. In the spring the cubs are born, dark balls of fur completely dependent upon their parents for life and sustenance. Their seemingly bottomless stomachs mean that the mother and father must constantly forage for food, but there is obvious pride in the parents' eyes as they watch the cubs grow and play. By summer the cubs have the physical characteristics of grownups, but the pictures catching them dashing around the fields after insects and the shadows of birds show them to be the inexperienced adults that they are. This is the season when the parents teach their children to fend for themselves, taking them farther and farther afield on foraging trips that will prepare them for their lives on their own. Finally, the autumn, the saddest part of the year: as the cold winds once again howl and the leaves turn to russet and gold, it is time for the family to disperse. The young foxes seem hesitant to leave their parents, but the mother knows that they must: only then can the age-old cycle continue. In a world where the incursions of man and modernization are increasingly endangering wildlife everywhere, the author dramatically presents the Ezo fox of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island and last frontier. "In the fiscal year ended June 30, 1917 the foreign trade of the United States in raw and manufactured furs reached nearly, if not fully, the high level of years preceding the war. The imports were valued at $21,553,375, while the exports amounted to $15,729,160, a sum exceeded in only one previous year, 1913 when they were $28,389,586. Home manufacture and utilization of American furs has grown enormously since the beginning of the war. The large export trade of the past year shows, therefore, a production of pelts of unprecedented value, in spite of the fact that the actual number of skins collected must have been less than in previous years. Many former trappers were more profitably employed in other industries, and many were deterred from plying their vocation by the increased restrictions on trapping, especially the costly nonresident licenses. Trapping restrictions properly enforced and limiting the taking of fur to prescribed seasons will result not only in conserving the fur supply but in greatly increasing the quality and value of the annual catch." -- p.2
