Todos los componentes de aplicacion en ingenieria estan sometidos, en mayor o menor grado, a procesos de fatiga y fractura. La fractura de los materiales es un fenomeno que comenzo a cobrar importancia a partir de la revolucion industrial, cuando se inicio la produccion de grandes maquinas y estructuras metalicas. El libro aborda esta problematica y presenta, ante todo, una clasificacion de los diferentes tipos de fracturas. Las bases teoricas que permiten el analisis de las roturas, asi como la evaluacion de la integridad de los componentes agrietados, constituyen la mecanica de la fractura. Varios capitulos de este libro se dedican a dicha disciplina y abordan desde las aproximaciones energeticas hasta la mecanica de la fractura elastoplastica, pasando por la mecanica de la fractura elastica y lineal. La relacion entre la estructura de los materiales ylos mecanismos que originan la rotura a escala microscopica es fundamental para comprender los procesos de fractura y disenaar nuevos materiales altamente resistentes a la rotura. En este sentido, los ultimos capitulos del libro analizan los mecanismos de fractura fragil y de fractura ductil, asi como los micromecanismos que determinan la rotura tanto en materiales metalicos como en ceramicos.

Se estudia el comportamiento a fractura de materiales, compuestos por una matriz de plástico en la que se ha dispersado una segunda fase en forma de partículas elastoméricas. Como matriz se han utilizado dos materiales diferentes: una resina de poliéster insaturada y poliestireno. Se estudia la morfología de los materiales compuestos preparados, se determinan los parámetros de fractura y otras propiedades mecánicas, se realiza el estudio fractográfico y finalmente se analizan los resultados e identifican los mecanismos de refuerzo que han actuado en cada caso. Se demuestra que la modificación con partículas elastoméricas tanto del poliéster insaturado como del poliestireno produce una mejora de la tenacidad a la fractura. El mecanismo de refuerzo de la tenacidad para el caso de matriz termoestable es el de "crack pinning-bowing" y para el caso de matriz termoplástica es el de múltiple "crazing."
