Alone in her native St Petersburg, Maria Glover sends an urgent summons to London and New York. Her son and daughter arrive too late to see her, but the end of their mother’s life marks the beginning of their own story: one of secrets, strangers, and the ultimate retelling of everything they thought they knew. ‘Docx knows that what we want most from a novel are stories into which we can sink our teeth and our hearts. His ability to evoke the atmosphere of a city is almost Dickensian’ Guardian ‘Full of insight: on the state of Russia, Britain and the US; and on the nature of music, addiction, love and sex. Funny and involving and the characters are often priceless’ Metro ‘I was amazed at the detail of Docx’s St Petersburg, with all its beauty and cruelty, similar to the style of Dostoevsky’ Financial Times ‘Unforgettable. Not since What a Carve Up! has there been such an absorbing indictment of the family’ Independent on Sunday

Pitch And Revelation written by Will Daddario and has been published by punctum books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-07 with Literary Criticism categories.

"Pitch and Revelation is the first book-length study of the poetry, prose, and dramatic literature of the African American poet Jay Wright (1934-). The authors premise their reading on joy as a foundational philosophical concept. In this, they follow Spinoza, who understood joy as that affect necessary for the construction of an intellectual love of God, leading into the infinite univocity of everything. Similarly, with Wright, joy leads to a visceral sense of what the authors call the great weave of the world. This weave is akin to the notion of entanglement made popular by physicists and contemporary scholars of Science Studies, such as Karen Barad, which speaks of the always ongoing, mutually constitutive connections of all matter and intellectual processes. By exhibiting and detailing the joy of reading Wright, Pitch and Revelation intends to help others chart their own paths into the intellectual, musical, and rhythmical territories of Wright's world so as to more fully experience joy in the world generally. Although the exhibitions of meaning making presented are instructive, they do not follow the "do as I do" or "do as I say" model of instructional texts. Instead, they invite the reader to "do along with us" as the authors make meaning from selections across Wright's erudite, dense, rhythmically fascinating, endlessly lyrical, highly structured, and seemingly hermetic body of work."--publisher's website.

Greatly expanded and updated from the 1977 original, this new edition explores the evolution of the modern horror film, particularly as it reflects anxieties associated with the atomic bomb, the Cold War, 1960s violence, sexual liberation, the Reagan revolution, 9/11 and the Iraq War. Spyscreen written by Toby Miller and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Performing Arts categories.

Spyscreen is a genre study of English-language spy fiction film and television between the 1930s and 1960s. Taking as his focus many well-known films and television series, Toby Miller uses a wide range of critical approaches - from textual interpretation, audience studies, and culturalhistory, through auteurism, imperial history, class, and governmentality, to genre, cultural imperialism, and gender.Beginning with an overview of the social and political background to the history, production, and analysis of spy fiction, topics discussed include the first canonical espionage movie, The 39 Steps, key film noir texts such as Gilda and The Third Man, the figure of popular spies, including JamesBond, and the importance of women to the genre. The result is not just an insightful new study of key texts in this popular genre; it is an important intervention in the methodology and practice of Screen Studies.
