These "Leaves in the Wind" are an attempt to capture bits and pieces of my family history before they fade into oblivion. The one-page essays reconstruct life stories, describe relevant events and places, and highlight underlying social and political settings. Not infrequently, the behavior of common people facing adversity or bonanza result in extraordinary actions. Many such events are captured in this book. Hopefully, the readers -from close relatives to perfect strangers- will find something of interest in this collection. With my grandson in mind, I have chosen a bilingual format to encourage him to preserve an essential aspect of his maternal heritage. Perhaps this feature will prove beneficial to other folks as well. Estas "Hojas al Viento" son un intento de captar fragmentos de mi historia familiar antes de que se desvanezcan en la nada.Los ensayos de una sola página reconstruyen vidas, describen eventos y lugares relevantes, y resaltan entornos sociales y políticos. No pocas veces el comportamiento de personas comunes ante la adversidad o la bonanza produce acciones extraordinarias. Este libro contiene múltiples ejemplos de tales circunstancias. Con suerte, los lectores -ya sean parientes cercanos o completos extraños- encontrarán algo de interés en esta colección. Con mi nieto en mente, he elegido un formato bilingüe para alentarlo a conservar un aspecto esencial de su herencia materna. Espero que esta característica también sea beneficiosa para otros lectores.

Shortly after the conquest of Granada in 1492 by the Catholic kings, Muslim subjects in Spain became known derogatorily as Moriscos, Moros, Muhammadans, Hagarans, and Saracens, despite the fact that they were forced to accept the sacrament of baptism. They were relegated to the margin of Christian society, considered aliens in their own land, and subjected to strictures and persecution. In turn, the Moriscos developed their own attitude, which they expressed in an extensive literature in Alijamiado, their Spanish dialect written in Arabic script. This literature was for the most part inspired by Arabic models reiterating Islamic values through the vehicles of history, legends, epic tales, stories, wisdom sayings, and sorcery. Written mostly during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Aljamiado literature is significant for the study of cultural change. Islam and the West: The Moriscos is the first comprehensive study of this long-neglected subject. Chejne surveys and analyzes the self-expression of the Moriscos and assesses their status as a minority struggling for survival, placing them in the social context of ideological conflict, the clash of religions and cultures, and differing perceptions. This book provides a more complete picture of the literatures and cultures of medieval Spain.

This volume examines the blending of fact and fiction in a series of cultural artefacts by post-dictatorship writers and artists in Argentina, many of them children of disappeared or persecuted parents. Jordana Blejmar argues that these works, which emerged after the turn of the millennium, pay testament to a new cultural formation of memory characterised by the use of autofiction and playful aesthetics. She focuses on a range of practitioners, including Laura Alcoba, Lola Arias, Félix Bruzzone, Albertina Carri, María Giuffra, Victoria Grigera Dupuy, Mariana Eva Perez, Lucila Quieto, and Ernesto Semán, who look towards each other's works across boundaries of genre and register as part of the way they address the legacies of the 1976-1983 dictatorship. Approaching these works not as second-hand or adoptive memories but as memories in their own right, Blejmar invites us to recognise the subversive power of self-figuration, play and humour when dealing with trauma.

Why did migrants from southern Portugal choose Argentina instead of following the traditional path to Brazil? Starting with this question, this book explores how, at the turn of the twentieth century, rural Europeans developed distinctive circuits of transatlantic labor migration linked to diverse immigrant communities in the Americas. It looks at transoceanic moves in the larger context of migration systems, examining their connections and the crucial role of social networks in migrants’ geographic mobility and adaptation.
