A obra Fragmentos Urbanos apresenta-se em dois eixos. Em sua primeira parte - que une ensaios sobre a modernização do Rio de Janeiro e de São Paulo e sobre a visão futurista do espaço urbano - estabelece um confronto entre realidade e utopia a partir do olhar que os contemporâneos lançam sobre a cidade. ¿Por isso, é dada importância a vários tipos de testemunhos escritos: a partir deles, a cidade vai sendo construída, vai sendo interpretada em sucessivos ajustes de foco que desvendam a relação de habitantes peculiares com um espaço que tentam conformar, quando não dominar, por ações concretas e recursos retóricos¿, descreve Annateresa. Na segunda parte do livro, a autora nos fala sobre algumas presenças urbanas paradigmáticas, numa aproximação paulatina do escultórico para o conjunto arquitetônico. Conflito e integração são, segundo a autora, os dois pólos que articulam esse segundo eixo do livro, marcado pela presença de categorias como desfuncionalização/ refuncionalização, conquista do espaço simbólico, articulação do novo num regime totalitário, presença do moderno numa situação peculiarmente periférica. ¿Nos vários momentos, a cidade é o cenário no qual essas ações se desenrolam, pois ela é sua verdadeira razão de ser¿, complementa Annateresa.

Gated Communities provides a historic, socio-political and contemporary cultural perspective of gated communities. In doing so it offers a different lens through which to view the historical vernacular background of this now global phenomenon. The authors review current thinking on gated communities and consider the sustainability issues that these contemporary 'lifestyle' communities raise.
