Beyond New Media: Discourse and Critique in a Polymediated Age examines a host of differing positions on media in order to explore how those positions can inform one another and build a basis for future engagements with media theory, research, and practice. Herbig, Herrmann, and Tyma have brought together a number of media scholars with differing paradigmatic backgrounds to debate the relative applicability of existing theories and in doing so develop a new approach: polymediation. Each contributor’s disciplinary background is diverse, spanning interpersonal communication, media studies, organizational communication, instructional design, rhetoric, mass communication, gender studies, popular culture studies, informatics, and persuasion. Although each of these scholars brings with them a unique perspective on media’s role in people’s lives, what binds them together is the belief that meaningful discourse about media must be an ongoing conversation that is open to critique and revision in a rapidly changing mediated culture. By studying media in a polymediated way, Beyond New Media addresses more completely our complex relationship to media(tion) in our everyday lives.

Church Times “As we traverse from the 19th and 20th centuries into the 21st, this important study reminds us that these voices challenging the myopia of immanence with the prospect of transcendence remain no less applicable to our plight now than they were then.” Christianity Today Book Awards - Academic Theology Finalist (2024) Critical insights into Kierkegaard’s influence on Barth’s theology. Karl Barth was often critical of Søren Kierkegaard’s ideas as he understood them. But close reading of the two corpora reveals that Barth owes a lot to the melancholy Dane. Both conceive of God as infinitely qualitatively different from humans, and both emphasize the shocking nearness of God in the incarnation. As public intellectuals, they used this theological vision to protect Christocentric faith from political manipulation and compromise. For Kierkegaard, this meant criticizing the state church; for Barth, this entailed resisting Nazism. Meticulously crafted by a father-son team of renowned systematic theologians, Beyond Immanence demonstrates that Kierkegaard and Barth share a theological trajectory—one that resists cynical manipulation of Christianity for political purposes in favor of uncompromising devotion to a God who is radically transcendent yet established kinship with humanity in time.

"Moving beyond the Pandemic: English and American Studies in Spain" contains the Proceedings of the 44th AEDEAN (Asociación española de estudios anglo-norteamericanos) Conference held in November, 2021 at the University of Cantabria, Spain. The volume is structured into four different sections: “Plenary Speakers”, “Language and Linguistics”, “Literature and Culture” and “Round Tables”. The “Plenary Speakers” section includes papers written by two outstanding figures in the fields of Western Studies and Film Studies, respectively: Neil Campbell’s “An Inventory of Echoes”: Worlding the Western in Trump Era Fiction and Celestino Deleyto’s Transnational Stars and the Idea of Europe: Marion Cotillard, Diane Kruger. The “Language and Linguistics” section includes eleven papers that tackle a variety of issues concerning synchronic and diachronic phenomena in the English language of either native or non-native speakers at the phonetic, lexical, or grammatical level. These studies are indicative of the various current methodological approaches to research in subfields such as language teaching, contrastive linguistics, language contact or language variation, to name but a few. The “Literature and Culture Studies” section contains nineteen papers on topics as diverse as the field itself, ranging from Irish, Canadian, South African, Australian, American or English Literature to Film, Television and Cultural Studies. Finally, the “Round Tables” section comprises four round tables on Literature, Music, Film and Cultural Studies. The contributions included in this volume are a representative and significant sample of the quality of the research being carried out at present in Spanish Universities in the fields of English and American Studies, and are solid evidence that our field is moving beyond the pandemic and is in excellent health.

The black box is orange—and there are actually two of them. They house the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, instruments vital to airplane crash analyses. But accident investigators cannot rely on the black boxes alone. Beginning with the 1931 Fokker F-10A crash that killed legendary football coach Knute Rockne, this fascinating book provides a behind-the-scenes look at plane wreck investigations. Professor George Bibel shows how forensic experts, scientists, and engineers analyze factors like impact, debris, loading, fire patterns, metallurgy, fracture, crash testing, and human tolerances to determine why planes fall from the sky—and how the information gleaned from accident reconstruction is incorporated into aircraft design and operation to keep commercial aviation as safe as possible.

Through insightful analysis and close readings, this book provides a fresh perspective on Sophocles' enduring legacy and his profound influence on Western literature and theater. While Sophocles' plays are often regarded as pillars of Greek tragedy, they transcend their origins to speak to universal human experiences. His characters grapple with profound questions of fate, free will, justice, and the nature of suffering. Sophocles' plays offer no easy answers, but they challenge us to confront these fundamental questions and to seek our own understanding. This book examines the major themes and motifs that run through Sophocles' plays, including the conflict between individual conscience and social order, the power of fate and destiny, and the tragic consequences of human pride and ambition. It also explores the playwright's use of dramatic techniques, such as irony, foreshadowing, and the chorus, to create powerful and moving theatrical experiences. In addition to providing detailed analysis of Sophocles' most famous plays, such as Oedipus Rex, Antigone, and Electra, this book also examines his lesser-known works, including Ajax, Philoctetes, and The Trachiniae.
