In Fragmented Lives, Gulag survivor Jacques Rossi opens a window onto everyday life inside the notorious Soviet prison camp through a series of portraits of inmates and camp personnel across all walks of life—from workers to peasants, soldiers, civil servants, and party apparatchiks. Featuring Rossi’s original illustrations and written in a sharp and dry tone, Rossi’s vignettes are also filled with surprising humor. A former agent in the Spanish Civil War and a lifelong Communist, Rossi never considered himself a victim. Instead, in the manner of Primo Levi, Solzhenitsyn, and Margaret Buber-Neumann, he sought to share and transmute his experience within the living hell of the Gulag. In so doing, he gives voice to the inmates whose lives were shattered by one of the most corrupt and repressive regimes of the twentieth century. An impassioned reminder to always question one’s beliefs, to have the courage to give up one’s illusions at the risk of one’s life, Fragmented Lives lays bare, with acute observations and biting wit, the falsity of the Soviet utopia that transformed Rossi’s home into a “huge Potemkin village, a farcical sham dissimulating oceans of mud and blood.”

This book mines the early history of modern Lebanon, focusing on the country's Jewish community and examining inter-Lebanese relations. It gives voice to personal testimonies, family archives, private papers, recollections of expatriate and resident Lebanese Jewish communities, as well as rarely tapped archival sources. With unique access to the Jewish communities in Lebanon and the Greater Middle East, the author presents both history and memory of Lebanon's Jews, considering what, how, and why they choose to remember their Lebanese lives. The work retells the history of Lebanon by placing Lebanese Jews into the country's narrative from the 1920s to 1970s, including an examination of the role they played in the construction of Lebanon's multi-sectarian system. Franck Salameh is Associate Professor of Near Eastern Studies in the Department of Slavic and Eastern Languages and Literatures at Boston College, USA.

What in the World! In this, her first book of short stories or fragments of life inspired by true events, Leven successfully applies her unique ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Customary events of life mutate into those that are bewildering, stupefying, erotic, and yet profound--events that diverge off the beaten path and baffle all ordinary description. A lover's pact, a job interview, a student-teacher relationship, an audition, a visit to a new art gallery, a relationship between old high school chums, a neighbor's dispute--all mushroom into the farcical, the grim, and the inconceivable. In Obscure Corners and Crevices, Leven offers her readers nine portraits of normal, intelligent, introspective individuals who end up enmeshed in usual life situations that unexpectedly warp into the incredible, into events that most of her readers will never have experienced . . . guaranteed! Her characters, along with her readers, are enveloped in a detailed anatomy of the human heart and mind through meticulously painted events, dialogue, and a unique philosophy that permeates all of Leven's writings. The tales, whether dramatic, extravagant, or droll, all maintain a lofty profundity and soaring level of suspense until the unforeseen final denouement.

Fragments Of Life Metaphysics And Art written by Léo Bronstein and has been published by Transaction Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01-01 with Philosophy categories.

A series of imaginary letters from various individuals - prisoner, soldier, philosopher, mathematician, and teacher - the book challenges the man-made distinction between spirit and matter, yet embraces the two-fold pattern of history and consciousness. Through a "fissure or tear in the accustomed," as one letter puts it, one sees the relationship of the fragment to the whole. Each of the writers yearns for the whole and seeks to find it in the fragment that has meaning for him. And it is chiefly in art that Leo Bronstein finds both the fragment and the whole of life, "material and moral," to be seized and probed and prized. Indeed, in the dialogue between two of the characters which follows upon the letters, synthesizing the ideas expressed therein, he presents a brief but brilliantly illustrated history of the worlds of Western art. Fragments of Life, Metaphysics and Art, a book "of peace" conceived amid the horrors of the Second World War, remains remarkably, unexpectedly, illuminatively contemporary. For, prior to the contentious debates on multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural studies, Leo Bronstein's approach to life, metaphysics, and art was absolutely interdisciplinary, pluralistic in its themes and insights. A scholar who foresaw the globalization of our concerns, he provides the tools for an empathic understanding of the contributions of a myriad of cultures to the constellation of what has become a global consciousness.

A deeply informed, yet playful and ironic look at how the internet has changed human experience, memory, and our sense of self, and that belongs on the shelf with the best writings of Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard. “One day, as I was daydreaming on the boulevard Beaumarchais, I had the idea—it came and went in a flash, almost in spite of myself—of Googling to find out what I’d been up to and where I’d been two evenings before, at five o’clock, since I couldn’t remember on my own.” So begins Maël Renouard’s Fragments of an Infinite Memory, a provocative and elegant inquiry into life in a wireless world. Renouard is old enough to remember life before the internet but young enough to have fully accommodated his life to the internet and the gadgets that support it. Here this young philosopher, novelist, and translator tries out a series of conjectures on how human experience, especially the sense of self, is being changed by our continual engagement with a memory that is impersonal and effectively boundless. Renouard has written a book that is rigorously impressionistic, deeply informed historically and culturally, but is also playful, ironic, personal, and formally adventurous, a book that withstands comparison to the best of Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard.
