This book reconsiders the linguistic notion of emphasis. For many, the concept of emphasis is confined to information structure. However, our understanding of the grammatical reflexes of emphasis is only partial as long as the expressive side of utterances is not taken into account. The book explores similarities, differences, and interactions between information structure and the expressive dimension of language in the domain of natural language grammar. Specifically, this monograph demonstrates that specific word order options, sometimes in combination with discourse particles, yield meaning effects that are typical for the expressive side of utterances and endow them with an exclamative flavor. Approaching this issue from a syntactic point of view, the book shows that there are syntactic categories (e.g., a certain class of particle verbs) and word orders (e.g., certain fronting patterns involving discourse particles) that directly connect to expressive meaning components. The work presented in this monograph combines theoretical analysis with experimental evidence from both perception and production studies.

Im Rahmen des Ravensburger Elternsurveys wurde das Konzept empirisch umgesetzt und über 2.000 Eltern zu ihrem Wohlbefinden befragt. Die Ergebnisse geben wichtige Impulse für Familienforscher und Familienpolitiker: Mütter und Väter leben kein traditionelles Familienmodell mehr, sondern ein Beziehungsmuster der "Männlichkeit und Weiblichkeit vor dem Hintergrund von Gemeinsamkeit und Gleichheit". Die Netzwerkanalysen haben belegt, wie elementar auch heute die Bedeutung der Großeltern für Eltern ist. Eltern wünschen sich von der Politik mehr Zeit für die Familie - es gibt aber auch viele Unterschiede bei Vätern und Müttern, bei Alleinerziehenden und solchen, die in Paarfamilien leben. "Pursuing happiness is not only idealistic, it is the world's best and perhaps only hope to avoid global catastrophe" (Global Happiness Policy Report 2018). With that, the report argues for happiness as overarching policy goal. This volume argues that parental well-being is well qualified to assume a central role for governments of industrially advanced nations that are in need of coping with the challenges of low fertility and societal aging. More than 4000 mothers and fathers of young children in Germany and Japan have been surveyed in regard to their well-being and satisfaction with many aspects related to their work and family lives. The volume brings together 13 scholars to analyze this unique dataset. The chapters fall into three main parts: (1) parenting and childcare, (2) self, social relatedness, and social structures, and (3) family policy well-being. A particular focus lies on the well-being of mothers in contrast to fathers. The volume uses a multidimensional concept of parental well-being, with each chapter highlighting one dimension, ranging from health, education, employment, and family policy satisfaction to partnership, social network, and childcare satisfaction. National differences are in several aspects superseded by gender, class, and personality types.
