Excerpt from France in War Time 1914-1915 I have been moved to write this little book in the hope that it may bring to the minds of those who are obliged to remain at home some idea of the great work which is being done in France by the Red Cross and other kindred organizations. If it succeeds in giving the slightest stimulus to that work I shall feel that my labour has not been in vain. Excerpt from The Diary of a French Private: War Imprisonment 1914 1915 The women are even more horrible than the men. The murderous glance, the clawed fingers, working and tearing as if in the dream of a tigress, the nostrils dilated and twitching, the lips cyanosed, grimacing hatred never before have I seen such faces Of damned souls, such Medusa heads. Who could believe that women should appear so horrible! When the train stops for any time, richly dressed matrons parade beside it, Ofi'ering our guards mugs of beer, cigars and cigarettes, bread-and-butter and jam, steaming sausages. Sick with hunger and fatigue, we look on at this prodigality. Above all, they say, give nothing to these French! Let them starve! We are Offered water. Excerpt from Paris War Days, Diary of an American, 1914 This is not a story of the world-wide war. These notes, jetted down at odd moments in a diary, are published with the idea of recording, day by day, the aspect, temper, mood, and humor of Paris, when the entire manhood of France responds with profound spontaneous patriotism to the call of mo bilization in defense of national existence. France is herself again. Her capital, during this supreme trial, is a new Paris, the like of which, after the present crisis is over, will probably not be seen again by any one now living. Excerpt from The Soul of Paris: Two Months in the French Capital During the War of 1914 When a man reaches the indiscreet age of fifty-two and has the impudence to publish a book it is not a Preface which he should write, but an Apology. The chapters contained within these covers were never intended to assume the dignity of a Book. They were begun as a sort of pastime, something to give the writer a mental distraction while other business required his remaining in Paris during the first two months of the War of 1914. The first two or three were mailed to my friend, George M. Smith, Managing Editor of The Evening Sun of New York. He told to "chuck 'em in the waste basket if he couldn't find any use for them." Smith apparently thought they were worth while and cabled me to send some more. It is altogether his fault that I kept this correspondence going. The public may never forgive him, but I owe him a deep debt of gratitude. The reader may declare my chapters "rot," but that makes no difference to me, for I never enjoyed anything so much in my life as the writing of these "Random Notes" in Paris during the War of 1914, for which this man Smith is chiefly responsible. Gentle reader, bear Smith no malice. He meant well, and if this prefatory apology is not convincing you don't have to read the book, for I am quite sure there will be any number of other books written upon the same subject by literary persons much less obscure and much more capable of dealing with it than I. However, it is my first chance after over thirty years of "common or garden" newspaper work to have a book printed with my name on the title page. Excerpt from Impressions and Experiences of a French Trooper, 1914-1915 The good folk of Rheims, excited and anxious, gathered from time to time in dense crowds outside the building of the Société Générale, on the walls Of which the latest telegrams were posted up, then broke up into knots of people who discussed the situation with anxiety and even consternation. At the Lion d'or, where I turned in for dinner on the terrace under the very shadow of the cathedral, I called for a bottle of Pommery, saying jocularly that I must just once more drink champagne; a message telephoned from a big Paris newspaper reassured me, and in the peaceful quiet of a fine summer's night I returned to my quarters with a light heart. As I was turning into bed I caught a glimpse through the barrack window of the two Gothic towers Of the cathedral, standing high above the city as if in the act of blessing and guarding it. All was quiet: the silence was only broken from time to time by the cry of the swallows as they skimmed through the clear air. Excerpt from Military Operations: France and Belgium, 1914 This volume completes the narrative, begun in Volume I., of the operations of the British Army in the Western theatre of war in the year 1914 down to the close of the Battles of Ypres. Beginning with an introductory chapter on the preparations initiated in the Homeland and the Empire for the continuation of the war, and a brief notice of the operations against the German Colonies, it describes the loss of Antwerp and the great battles in Flanders La Bassee, Armentieres, Messines and Ypres, which raged without a break from the loth October to the 22nd November 1914. During this period there was little change in the character of the fighting between the two equally matched antagonists German superiority in numbers and metal was balanced by the high military qualities of the Allies. An account of such combats is bound to be more or less monotonous, but those who read the story Should endeavour to picture to themselves what those weeks of uninterrupted struggle meant to the com manders in the field and the thin line of troops which stood between the enemy and the Channel ports. Had the scale on which Volume I. Was written been continued, the narrative of battles so long drawn out would have extended into several volumes, and much beyond the compass now authorized for the series.1 There were seven days on which very critical fighting took place in August and September as compared with twenty days in October and November 1914, and the forces concerned in the latter period were larger and spread over a wider front. It has therefore been necessary to exercise severe compression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
