Excerpt from France Since the First Empire It seems necessary to say a few words to explain how this book was written. I am conscious that it is not what it would have been had my husband lived to finish it. He meant it to be a complete history of the different parties which for centuries in France have struggled and fought each one in turn gaining supreme power by trampling the others under foot, and which still represent political life and feeling in France. He loved France with an ardent love. He longed to make his countrymen just to her, to make them understand her history and sympathise with her difficulties. He studied her history and her literature with ceaseless interest. Newspapers, essays, memoirs, histories were carefully read, and from them were volumes of notes taken. Excerpt from The French Revolutionary Epoch, Vol. 1: Being a History of France, From the Beginning of the First French Revolution to the End of the Second Empire "The French Revolutionary Epoch" is an attempt to present to the general reader in a concise form a history of France from the beginning of the first French Revolution to the end of the second Empire. The work is chiefly based upon the fourth, fifth, and sixth volumes of the Histoire des Francais, by MM. Lavallee and Lock, though my introductory chapter and the second part of the first chapter are mainly summarised from M. Taine's admirable book on the Ancien Regime. I have also been much indebted to the works of Carlyle, de Groncourt, Michelet, Quinet, and other authors, who have all treated of the period which I endeavour to describe. Excerpt from The French Court and Society, Vol. 2 of 2: Reign of Louis XVI. And First Empire It was the sth of May, 1789, - One of the most memorable days in the annals of France. The tapestry displayed on the 4th, on the occasion of the procession Of the States General to the Church of St. Louis, still decorated the fronts of. The houses in the principal streets of Versailles. The assembling of the States had brought a further large influx Of visitors from Paris and the adjacent villages and towns, - each estate of the realm being fully represented, - the people, like their delegates, Tar outnumbering the rest. Within the usually quiet precincts of the palace a numerous throng was collected, anxious to catch a glimpse of the aristocratic and high ecclesiasti cal deputies. Some rolled by in gilded chariots befitting the wearers of mitres and plumes. Others, the poorer clergy and humbler members of the T z'ers Etat, compelled to go to and from Paris since the previous evening, and now travel ling together, seemed already inclined to frater nise, - had picked up for their conveyance some very shaky vehicles, which, as well as their horses, had a most tumble-down look. The greater part, however, Of the plebeian deputies, being lodged in the neighborhood, made their way to the Grande Salle des Menus on foot, amidst the vociferous cheering Of the multitude. Excerpt from The French Court and Society, Vol. 1 of 2: Reign of Louis XVI. And First Empire "Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown." Such was the text of the last Lenten sermon preached in 1774 before Louis XV. at Versailles. Truly, the mantle of a Bourdaloue, Flechier, or Massillon, had not falle on any of the court preachers of that day. Rarely, very rarely, was then heard the stirring pulpit eloquence which, during the former reign, and in the earlier years of that of Louis XV., so often awakened terror in the accusing conscience of the king, and thrilled with fear and trembling - passing though the emotion may have been - the fashionable assemblages of courtly sinners who thronged the gilded chapel of Versailles. The philosophy of the salons had invaded the pulpit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Episodes of French History: During the Consulate and the First Empire Tu: contents of the present Volume were obtained while the Cornpiler was engaged in writing a royal biography which, from feelings of self-respect; she subsequently declined to complete. No attempt has been made to arrange the sketches in chronological order, but rather to diversify their interest and subject-matter as much as possible. History is the great drama of the world; but we never thoroughly comprehend its whole value until we have studied, not only its main outline, but also its details. Here are some of those details z - Hidden motives for public measures; indi cations of character which serve to explain actions otherwise appa rently incongruous; glimpses of a past which was not less wonder ful in its inner workings than in its outward demonstration; and, finally, a few stray leaves which have appeared to be well worth gathering up. Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 1: Forming a Sequel to "the History of the French Revolution" I use the word here in its ordinary acceptation, and, apply ing it to subjects most diverse, will endeavour to make my meaning plain. One often observes in a child, a workman, or a statesman, something which one does not at once qualify by the name of wit, because it is devoid of brilliance, but which one calls intelligence, because the person endowed with it is able at once to grasp the meaning of what is said to him; sees, understands with half a word, if a child, what is being taught him - if a workman, the work given him to execute if a statesman, events, their causes and consequences; reads character, the proclivities of the men he has to deal with, the conduct to be expected from them, and is neither surprised nor embarrassed by what may take place, although it may cause him sorrow. This is what is understood by intelligence, and for all practical purposes this simple quality, which makes no show, is of greater utility in life than all the gifts of mind, genius excepted, which, after all, is but intelligence with the addition of brilliancy, power, breadth, and readiness. Excerpt from A History of France From the Earliest Times to the Fall of the Second Empire in 1870 In conclusion it may be observed, that it has been the earnest endeavour of the Author to avoid the capital error of writing the History of France from an English point of view, a course which cannot fail to convey an unjust conception of the institutions, government, habits, and character of the people. What is needed is an im partial, genial, and even sympathetic account of French history. This has been the principle upon which the Work has been undertaken; but with what success it has been carried out is for competent critics to decide.
