Francis Ysidro Edgeworth FBA was an Anglo-Irish philosopher and political economist who made significant contributions to the methods of statistics during the 1880s. From 1891 onward he was appointed the founding editor of The Economic Journal. Francis Ysidro Edgeworth was an Irish polymath, a highly influential figure in the development of neo-classical economics, and contributor to the development of statistical theory. He was the first to apply certain formal mathematical techniques to individual decision making in economics. Edgeworth developed utility theory, introducing the indifference curve and the famous "Edgeworth box," which have become standards in economic theory. He is also known for the "Edgeworth conjecture" which states that the core of an economy shrinks to the set of competitive equilibria as the number of agents in the economy gets large. The high degree of originality demonstrated in his most important book on economics, Mathematical Psychics, was matched only by the difficulty in reading it. A deep thinker, his contributions were far ahead of his time and continue to inform the fields of microeconomics and areas such as welfare economics. Thus, Edgeworth's work has advanced our understanding of economic relationships among traders, and thus contributes to the establishment of a better society for all.

Francis Ysidro Edgeworth (1845-1926) va ser un economista de la primera fornada neoclàssica i un dels pioners en el terreny de la inferència estadística. Tot i que en ambdós camps va fer contribucions notables, el seu tarannà discret i submís i la prepotència de Marshall i de Pearson van fer que la seva obra quedés relegada en vida a un injust segon terme. Després de la seva mort, l'aparentment carinyós obituari de Maynard Keynes va acabar d'enterrar la seva obra i com a tomba acadèmica el van deixar, ben momificat per Bowley, dins la seva pròpia caixa, la "caixa d'Edgeworth". Però des de fa cinquanta anys la seva anàlisi de l'intercanvi bilateral ha tingut una resurrecció espectacular i, d'altra banda, la progressiva formalització del corrent dominant -ultraneoclàssic- de l'Economia ha conduït a situar la figura d'Edgeworth en el punt de mira dels historiadors del pensament, tant econòmic com estadístic, que reconeixen que va anar cent anys pel davant del seu temps. Malgrat aquest reconeixement, encara no hi havia hagut cap biografia com cal que ens acostés Edgeworth en el terreny personal. Només es disposava d'un grapat d'articles o capítols dispersos de llibres que deixaven molts punts foscos i obrien, més que tancaven, molts interrogants: Què se'n sabia de la seva família materna, d'origen català? A qui va estimar al llarg de la seva vida? Quins amics va tenir? De qui li va venir la inspiració inicial per construir les seves teories? D'on procedien els diners que li van permetre publicar les seves primeres obres? Com el van tractar els seus col·legues Jevons, Marshall, Walras i Pareto? Fins a quin punt va influir en Keynes i en els textos d'Economia del segle XX? Esperonat per l'origen mig català d'Edgeworth -que el professor Estapé, amb el seu sarcasme característic, presentava en els anys seixanta com "la màxima aportació de Catalunya a la ciència econòmica"- Lluís Barbé ha fet seu el repte de reconstruir una vida força distant en el temps i en l'espai i ha dedicat més de deu anys de la seva recerca a aquesta apassionant tasca. Després de recórrer sovint les biblioteques de Dublín, Oxford, Londres i Cambridge i de desxifrar milers de cartes familiars, ha reeixit en confegir el retrat ple de vida que teniu entre les mans, perquè Barbé creu "com Seurat que a base de milers de punts de colors es pot arribar a compondre una imatge vívida i que dels mils detalls de les cartes -i fins i tot poemes- familiars en pot sortir una crònica que ens dibuixi un retrat prou precís". I a fe que ho és de precís, fins a un punt tal que l'autor aconsegueix que no tan sols arribem a conèixer Edgeworth, el gran economista i estadístic, sinó també que acabem per considerar-lo un vell amic.
