Durchbruch, Umsetzung und Wahrnehmung nationalsozialistischer Politik in Frankfurt am Main zwischen 1933 und 1945 Über Frankfurt am Main liegt bislang keine neuere Darstellung seiner Geschichte zwischen 1933 und 1945 vor. Hier setzt dieser Band an, der zum einen die Durchsetzung der NS-Herrschaft auf verschiedenen Feldern der kommunalen Politik und Verwaltung sowie den Wandel von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft untersucht. Dabei werden ebenso die Stadtplanung, kulturelle Entwicklungen und die nationalsozialistische Imagepolitik in den Blick genommen. Zum anderen wird die Dynamisierung der Gewalt gegen diejenigen Gruppen nachgezeichnet, die seit 1933 als »Gemeinschaftsfremde« unterdrückt und bekämpft worden waren. Auch in Frankfurt richtete sich die rassistisch motivierte Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung zuvorderst gegen Jüdinnen und Juden; die Angehörigen der großen jüdischen Gemeinde wurden im Holocaust fast vollständig Opfer der NS-Massenmorde. Ein ähnliches Schicksal erfuhren Sinti und Roma, Homosexuelle und andere Gruppen, die oft nur eine Existenz am Rande der Gesellschaft fristen konnten. Wie lange die Propaganda des NS-Regimes verfing, zeigt sich an der unverbrüchlichen Treue breiter Bevölkerungskreise noch dann, als große Teile Frankfurts im Bombenkrieg in Schutt und Asche aufgingen.

The diaries of Robert W. Heingartner, a US consular official posted to Frankfurt am Main, provide an account of the rise of Nazism in that city from 1928 to the end of 1937, when the regime appeared to have stabilized itself, written by a close and careful observer. Heingartner describes the impact of the Depression on the life of the city, and closely monitors the political crises that accompanied the rise of the Nazi party from a fringe radical group to becoming the ruling party in 1933. He documents the establishment of Nazi rule in Frankfurt from 1933 on, including economic and social conditions, and the persecution of political opponents and Frankfurt's Jewish population, with whose plight he was confronted as a consular official. English summary: What effect did the leaders of the Third Reich have on judicial officers? Because the system obtained legitimation through judicial adjudication, it was necessary for the regime to have loyal judges. Arthur von Gruenewaldt takes Frankfurt's Higher Regional Court as an example in order to examine and detail the dismissal, replacement and disenfranchisement of judges on political or racist grounds and how they were replaced with either so-called old fighters, convinced national socialists, careerists or opportunists. In this volume, the careers and political behaviors of high judicial officers and the persecuted, as well as the self-seekers, are set out in comprehensive collective and individual biographies. To round off, the author looks at the post-war reconstruction of Hessian law and considers continuity of personnel. Da sie ihm durch ihre Rechtsprechung Legitimation verschaffte, benotigte das Regime eine in seinem Sinne zuverlassige Richterschaft. Eintracht Frankfurt: ein liberaler und weltoffener Fußballverein in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Vor der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten galt die Frankfurter Eintracht als liberaler und weltoffener Fußballverein. Imagebildend war vor allem das Engagement jüdischer Funktionäre, Athleten und Förderer, die großen Anteil an den sportlichen Erfolgen des Clubs hatten. Dennoch kooperierte die Eintracht ab 1933 wie die meisten Sportorganisationen relativ widerstandslos mit dem neuen Regime. Vier Funktionäre prägten die Politik des Vereins während der NS-Zeit maßgeblich – unter ihnen der Fußballstar und spätere Ehrenpräsident Rudolf Gramlich und der berühmte Leichtathlet Adolf Metzner. Eintracht Frankfurt hat in den vergangenen Jahren große Anstrengungen zur Aufarbeitung der Clubgeschichte unternommen. Eine umfassende Untersuchung zu den »Vereinsführern« fehlte jedoch bislang. When the Nazis seized power in Germany in 1933 they promised to create a new, harmonious society under the leadership of the Fuumlhrer, Adolf Hitler. The concept of Volksgemeinschaft - 'the people's community' - enshrined the Nazis' vision of society'; a society based on racist, social-Darwinist, anti-democratic, and nationalist thought. The regime used Volksgemeinschaft to define who belonged to the National Socialist 'community' and who did not. Being accorded the status of belonging granted citizenship rights, access to the benefits of the welfare state, and opportunities for advancement, while these who were denied the privilege of belonging lost their right to live. They were shamed, excluded, imprisoned, murdered. Volksgemeinschaft was the Nazis' project of social engineering, realized by state action, by administrative procedure, by party practice, by propaganda, and by individual initiative. Everyone deemed worthy of belonging was called to participate in its realization. Indeed, this collective notion was directed at the individual, and unleashed an enormous dynamism, which gave social change a particular direction. The Volksgemeinschaft concept was not strictly defined, which meant that it was rather marked by a plurality of meaning and emphasis which resulted in a range of readings in the Third Reich, drawing in people from many social and political backgrounds. Visions of Community in Nazi Germany scrutinizes Volksgemeinschaft as the Nazis' central vision of community. The contributors engage with individual appropriations, examine projects of social engineering, analyze the social dynamism unleashed, and show how deeply private lives were affected by this murderous vision of society.
