Nach dem uberraschend schnellen militarischen Triumph im Westen unterstellte Hitler im Sommer 1940 Frankreich und Belgien der Zustandigkeit der Wehrmacht. Zwischen 1940 und 1944 residierten in Paris und Brussel deutsche Militarbefehlshaber, die mit vergleichsweise kleinen Staben von Verwaltungsbeamten die Aufsicht uber die im Amt verbliebenen franzosischen und belgischen Behorden ausubten. Wahrend die Oberfeldkommandantur in Lille, zustandig fur die beiden Departements Nord und Pas-de-Calais, dem MBF in Brussel unterstand, amtierten im ubrigen besetzten Frankreich unter dem MBF in Paris auf regionaler Ebene drei Militarbezirkschefs, zu denen nach dem Einmarsch deutscher Truppen in die unbesetzte Zone im November 1942 noch der Kommandant des Heeresgebietes Sudfrankreich hinzukam. Ihnen unterstanden die Feld-, Kreis- und Ortskommandanten, die die unterste Ebene der Verwaltungshierarchie bildeten. Daneben verfugten jedoch Heer und Luftwaffe sowie insbesondere die Marine sowohl in Belgien als auch in Frankreich zusatzlich uber eigene Dienststellen. Das gleiche galt fur den Bereich der Rustungswirtschaft. Alle diese Verwaltungsinstanzen und Buros haben im Laufe der vierjahrigen Besatzungszeit zahllose Akten produziert, die bei der Raumung der besetzten Gebiete nur zum Teil vernichtet wurden. Nach dem deutschen Zusammenbruch erlebten diese Papiere ein wechselvolles Schicksal. Erst nach vielen Jahren und auf verschiedenen Umwegen, denen in der Einleitung nachgespurt wird, gelangte schliesslich ein Teil der Akten nach Deutschland zuruck. Der Rest befindet sich heute in Frankreich. Der vorliegende Band ist das Ergebnis eines vom Deutschen Historischen Institut in Paris lancierten deutsch-franzosischen Gemeinschaftsprojekts. Es verzeichnet erstmals und thematisch eng begrenzt jene Bestande, die heute im Bundesarchiv, Abteilung Militararchiv in Freiburg zur Geschichte der deutschen Besatzung in Frankreich und Belgien aufbewahrt werden. Parallel zu dieser Edition haben die Archives Nationales in einem eigenen Band ein Inventar der deutschen Akten erstellt, die nach dem Ende der Besatzungszeit in das Pariser Nationalarchiv gelangt und dort heute in der Serie AJ 40 zusammengefasst sind. Ausgestattet mit Registern, Organigrammen und einer Inhaltsubersicht des jeweils anderen Bandes erhalt die Forschung damit zum ersten Mal einen Uberblick zu Umfang und Inhalt der erhalten gebliebenen Akten.

Im Juli 1942 wird Mala bei einer Razzia festgenommen und im September ins Frauenlager Auschwitz-Birkenau deportiert. Dort hat sie als Läuferin und Dolmetscherin Einblick in alle Vernichtungsaktionen. Klug und risikobereit nützt sie ihre Informationen und leistet erfolgreich Widerstand: Sie rettet weibliche Häftlinge vor der Selektion ins Gas, verschafft Kranken leichtere Arbeit, knüpft Kontakte zwischen Widerstandsgruppen. Dann verliebt sie sich in den polnischen Häftling Edward Galinski. Ihnen gelingt die Flucht aus dem Lager, doch nach dreizehn Tagen werden sie wieder gefasst.

Zentralstaatliche Archive im Spannungsfeld von Fachautonomie, Diktaturvereinnahmung und Systemtransformation.
