Der Sauerländer Franz Heinrich Reusch (1825-1900) war kein besonders schöpferischer Theologe, sondern ein akribisch arbeitender Gelehrter. Als Professor, zeitweilig sogar Rektor der Universität Bonn betreute er eine führende Zeitschrift der liberalen katholischen Theologen in Deutschland. Seine Weigerung, die neuen Papstdogmen von 1870 anzuerkennen, führte zur Exkommunikation. Reusch wurde erster Generalvikar der Alt-Katholiken, konnte allerdings als skrupulöser Priester manche einschneidenden Reformen (Liturgie, Aufhebung des Zölibatzwangs) nicht mittragen. Nach 1870 wandte sich der Bibelexeget (AT) unter enger Zusammenarbeit mit Ignaz Döllinger ganz der Kirchengeschichte zu. Sein bahnbrechendes Werk über den Index der verbotenen Bücher (1883/85) hat die vatikanische Behörde förmlich zu einer Reform genötigt. Der hier vorgelegte dokumentarische Band enthält die maßgebliche Monographie über Reusch (Leopold Karl Goetz, 1901), Texte zur Maßregelung der Bonner Professoren durch den Kölner Erzbischof und eine Auswahl der ab 1871 veröffentlichten Schriften von F.H. Reusch: Das Unfehlbarkeits-Dekret (1871); Theologische Fakultäten oder Seminare? (1873); Die deutschen Bischöfe und der Aberglaube (1879); Der Theologe und Dichter Fray Luis de Leon (1873); Anmerkungen zu "Kardinal Robert Bellarmin" (1887); "Predigten" (ediert 1876). Erschlossen wird das Schaffen eines gewissenhaften, überaus bibliophilen Forschers, der auf scharfe Polemik verzichtet und gerade so die größte Wirkung erzielt: wissenschaftliche Aufklärung als Beitrag zur Kirchenreform.
