Die bekannteste Verwendung des Frau Welt-Motivs findet sich bei Konrad von Würzburg in seiner Versnovelle „Der Welt Lohn“. Diese Novelle entstand laut Bleck vermutlich um 1266 und ist sieben Mal vollständig überliefert. Der Ritter Wirnt von Grafenberg (Verfasser des Wigalois) liest abends in seiner Kemenate eine Minneaventiure, als ihm die wunderschöne Frau Welt erscheint. Sie ist gekommen, um ihm den „hôhen lôn“ zu gewähren und präsentiert ihm ihren stinkenden, von Ungeziefer und Geschwüren bedeckten Rücken. Wirnt ändert sofort sein Leben und nimmt das Kreuz um Buße zu tun. Dieses Motiv der von vorn wunderschönen Frau mit dem ekelhaften Rücken wurde in der Forschung bisher von Gisela Thiel in ihrer Dissertation am umfangreichsten untersucht, ihre Ergebnisse sind die Hauptgrundlage meiner Hausarbeit. Die meisten Artikel, die sich umfassend mit dem Thema „Frau Welt“ beschäftigen sind schon über 50 Jahre alt. Neuere Abhandlungen gibt es kaum. Doch warum ist das so? Haben wir das Interesse an diesem Motiv verloren, das über viele Jahrhunderte hindurch aus der mittelalterliche Literatur nicht weg zu denken war? Bis heute finden sich Spuren des Motivs, wenn auch „nur“ durch überlieferte Texte, wie zum Beispiel Konrads „Der Welt Lohn“ oder durch Steinfiguren, wie zum Beispiel am Wormser Dom. Im Folgenden werde ich das Motiv im Wandel der Zeit darstellen. Zuerst werde ich das Motiv selbst und seine Entwicklung beschreiben. Anschließend werde ich die Umsetzung des Motivs in der mittelalterlichen Literatur anhand einiger Beispiele aufzeigen. Danach komme ich zum Kern meiner Hausarbeit der Verserzählung „Der Welt Lohn“ von Konrad von Würzburg. Diese werde ich hinsichtlich der Verwendung des Motivs untersuchen und analysieren. Abschließend werde ich die weitere Verwendung des „Frau Welt“-Motivs in Literatur und Kunst beschreiben, bevor ich zu meinem Fazit komme.

An diesem Punkt soll diese Arbeit ansetzen. Denn die Frage danach, was sie zu jener macht und welchen allegorischen Gehalt sie hat, stellt sich, bevor eine Interpretation überhaupt möglich ist. Daher ist die Frage, der hier nachgegangen werden soll, welche Form die Allegorie der Frau Welt bei Konrads von Würzburg Der Welt Lohn aufweist und welche daraus resultierende Funktion sie für die gesamte Erzählung hat. Das geplante Vorgehen beinhaltet zunächst eine Einführung in die Entwicklung des Motivs, um dann konkret in die Arbeit mit dem Allegorie-Begriff hinsichtlich Der Welt Lohn einzusteigen. Zuerst soll das weite Begriffsfeld der Allegorie durch das Legen von analyserelevanten Schwerpunkten eingegrenzt werden, um nach einer knappen Wiedergabe der Erzählung die Allegorie der Frau Welt mithilfe jener Kernaspekte zu untersuchen, was den Mittelpunkt der Arbeit darstellt. Daraufhin soll eine auf den erarbeiteten Ergebnissen basierende Thematisierung der Wirkungsabsicht der Erzählung Konrads folgen, um mit einem abschließenden Fazit enden zu können.

After an extensive introduction that takes stock of the relevant research literature on Old Age in the Middle Ages and the early modern age, the contributors discuss the phenomenon of old age in many different fields of late antique, medieval, and early modern literature, history, and art history. Both Beowulf and the Hildebrandslied, both Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival and Titurel, both the figure of Merlin and the trans-European tradition of Perceval/Peredur/Parzival, then the figure of the vetula in a variety of medieval French, English, and Spanish texts, and of the Old Man in The Stricker's Daniel, both the treatment of old age in Langland's Piers the Plowman and in Jean Gerson's sermons are dealt with. Other aspects involve late-antique epistolary literature, early modern French farce in light of Disability Studies, the social role of old, impotent men in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Netherlandish paintings, and the scientific discourse of old age and health since the 1500s. The discourse of Old Age proves to have been of central importance throughout the ages, so the critical examination of the issues involved sheds intriguing light on the cultural history from late antiquity to the seventeenth century.

In the midst of the religious ferment, foreign invasions, and internal political strife that beset Italy before the full effects of the Counter-Reformation, the powerful and humble alike turned to popular prophecy for guidance and solace. Ottavia Niccoli examines here the forms of these prophecies--including interpretations of natural disasters, abnormal births, floods, and planetary conjunctions--and gives examples of how they were transmitted from the lower classes to the elite through street singers, apocalyptic preachers, astrologers, and printers. By tracing the ongoing revision of the prophecies, Niccoli reveals them as an indication of how various levels of society viewed events of the time, as a form of propaganda for such causes as anti-Lutheranism, and as a reflection of the interaction between "high" and "low" culture. Based on popular leaflets, diaries, civic chronicles, and iconographic sources, this book explores the expression of a culture in which nature, religion, and politics formed a unified system with a uniform code of interpretation. It connects the decline of prophecy in Italy with the end of the Italian wars and the beginning of the Counter-Reformation, when popular preaching was banned and charismatic religion discouraged.
