The Reformation of the 16th century was a complex and multifaceted political, social, cultural, and religious process. Most historians agree, however, that in the framework of this process it was the religious and theological efforts to reform and renew the late medieval church—decadent and irrelevant in many ways—that were the initiating forces that set a broad historical movement in motion. Among these reforming religious and theological forces, the Lutheran reform movement was the most important and influential one. It was the historical impact of the theological genius of the Wittenberg professor Martin Luther (1483-1546) that profoundly changed and shaped the face of Europe and beyond. Today, Lutheranism has become a worldwide communion of churches that stretches from Germany to Siberia, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, and Surinam. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Lutheranism presents information on major theological issues, historical developments of Lutheranism worldwide, Lutheran ecumenical and missionary involvement and activities, worship and liturgy, spirituality, social ethics, inter-religious and Jewish relations, Lutheranism and the arts, theology, and important representatives of Lutheranism. This is done through a detailed chronology, an introductory essay, an appendix of Lutheran Churches, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Lutheranism.

[Lutheran Liturgical Identity. Contributions to a Phenomenology of the Liturgical Spatial Experience] The contributions and the research of the Neuendettelsau Chair of Practical Theology on a phenomenology of liturgical-spatial experience presented here focus on the question of a newly defined Lutheran liturgical identity. The well-known Practical Theologian Klaus Raschzok examines its effects on the practice of Sunday worship, on the understanding of baptism, marriage and burial, and on the approach to church space. These fundamental contributions to the question of a denominational-cultural perspective on worship services are supplemented by studies on paramentics and in particular on the liturgical vestments, the design of the Vasa Sacra, questions of pericope order and the salutogenetic function of worship and preaching in the Protestant pastoral ministry.

[Adolf Harnack about the Women's Question. A Church History Study] The Protestant theologian and church historian Adolf Harnack (1851–1930), the most important scholar in science policy in Wilhelmian Prussia, dedicated himself to the contemporary "women's question" since 1890. Therefore, he used his network in the ministry of Education and his contact to the Emperor. Additionally, he had connections to the women's movement. This study reconstructs due to extensive research in about a dozen archives, how Harnack supported the "women's quest" in the Evangelical-Social Congress and how he was involved in the reform of female education in Prussia. Furthermore, he encouraged young female students and scholars at the University of Berlin and did historical research on women in Early Christianity.

This volume with its emphasis on "Southern Europe" is devoted now for the second time to theological research by women in a particular region of Europe. Women doing research in France, Italy, Spain and Greece provide evidence of and reflection on the history of women's theological studies in their countries and present the results of their studies. These reveal an impressive spectrum of theological research which sometimes has been and must be conducted in difficult structural contexts and under very different economic conditions. This makes the vitality of the research presented all the more convincing; in the different contexts of the individual countries it demonstrates specific and very varied emphases in academic theory and method. Precisely because of their complex and diverse points of departure, the articles evidence a fundamental, interdisciplinary approach and a creative way of seeing things which is concerned to ensure a fundamental openness for debate and dialogue. This volume thus provides an insight into the fascinating diversity and complexity of theological research in Europe.
