Die US-Amerikanerin Jane Addams (1860-1935) und die Deutsche Alice Salomon (1872-1948) zahlten zu den national und international bekanntesten Sozialreformerinnen ihrer Zeit. Von den 1890er Jahren bis zum Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges lieferten diese beiden Frauen und ihre Mitarbeiterinnen wichtige Anstosse zur Losung der asozialen Frageo und der aFrauenfrageo sowie Beitrage zur Neu- und Umdefinition der sozialen Arbeit in den Vereinigten Staaten und in Deutschland. Erstmalig wird hier eine Doppelbiographie dieser beiden Frauen vorgelegt, die exemplarisch die Reformbestrebungen der deutschen und amerikanischen Frauenbewegung untersucht und die wechselseitige Rezeption sozialpolitischer Impulse im transatlantischen Reformdialog aufzeigt. Der Vergleich der in Deutschland lange vernachlassigten feministischen Reformtradition mit ihrem amerikanischen Gegenstuck legt dabei die Revision zahlreicher hergebrachter Interpretationen der Frauenbewegungen in beiden Landern nahe. Im ersten Teil werden wir eine Historische Einordnung vornehmen, die mit der Epoche der Aufklärung beginnt und die Schritte der Entwicklung der sozialen Arbeit anhand der Entwicklung zu einem demokratischen Staat reflektiert. Im Zweiten Teil werden wir zunächst einen Blick auf die Frauenbewegung werfen, um dann genauer auf die bürgerliche Frauenbewegung und Alice Salomon, sowie deren Werke und Wirkung auf die bürgerliche Frauenbewegung und den Beginn der sozialen Arbeit einzugehen. Zum Schluss unserer Hausarbeit werden wir die Entwicklung der Frauenbewegung und der sozialen Arbeit in der NS-Zeit und in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland genauer betrachten und ein persönliches Fazit zu der damals entstandenen Entwicklung geben.

The kindergarten--as institution, as educational philosophy, and as social reform movement--is one of Germany's most important contributions to the world. Swiss pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and his German student Friedrich Fröbel, who founded the kindergarten movement around 1840, envisioned kindergartens as places of education and creative engagement for children across all classes, not merely as daycare centers for poor families. At first, however, Germany proved an inhospitable environment for this new institution. After the failure of the 1848 revolutions, several German governments banned the kindergarten as a hotbed of subversion because of its links to women's rights movements. German revolutionaries who were forced into exile introduced the kindergarten to the United States, where it soon found roots among native-born as well as immigrant educators. In an era when convention limited middle-class women to the domestic sphere, the kindergarten provided them with a rare opportunity not only for professional work, but also for involvement in social reform in the fields of education and child welfare. Through three generations, American and German women established many kinds of contacts In this elegant book, Ann Taylor Allen presents the first transnational history of the kindergarten as it developed in Germany and the United States between 1840 and World War I. Based on a large body of previously untapped sources in bothcountries, The Transatlantic Kindergarten shows how a common body of ideas and practices adapted over time to two very different political and social environments. Since the end of the First World War, early childhood education in the United States and Germany has followed the patterns laid down in the nineteenth century. However, as Allen's nuanced analysis suggests, the provision of public preschool education is still an unfinished and much discussed project on both sides of the Atlantic.

This study analyzes history as performance: as the interaction of actors, plays, stages and enactments. By this, it examines women’s politics in Habsburg Galicia around 1900: a Polish woman active in the peasant movement, a Ukrainian feminist, and a Jewish Zionist. It shows how the movements constructed essentialistically regarded collectives, experience as a medially comprehensible form of credibility, and a historically based inevitability of change, and legitimized participation and intervention through social policy and educational practices. Traits shared by the movements included the claim to interpretive sovereignty, the ritualization of participation, and the establishment of truths about past and future.

The first German women's movement embraced the belief in a demographic surplus of unwed women, known as the Frauenberschu, as a central leitmotif in the campaign for reform. Proponents of the female surplus held that the advances of industry and urbanization had upset traditional marriage patterns and left too many bourgeois women without a husband. This book explores the ways in which the realms of literature, sexology, demography, socialism, and female activism addressed the perceived plight of unwed women.
