Wie sieht die Entwicklung weiblicher Berufskarrieren von 1865 bis heute aus? Der Autor arbeitet den Karrierebegriff im Zusammenhang mit der Frauenbewegung und der sozialwissenschaftlichen Karrieretheorie auf. Anhand von qualitativen Interviews werden die aktuellen weiblichen Karrieren im Kontext des gesellschaftlichen Wandels dargestellt. Die erste systematische Untersuchung zum Thema Frauenkarrieren. Dieses Buch versucht zum einen, den Stand der soziologischen und erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskussionen nachzuzeichnen und die Bedeutung der spezifischen Genderaspekte zum Karrierebegriff aufzuzeigen. Zum anderen wird die Aktualität der Frauenbewegung seit 1865 bis heute gewürdigt. Frauenkarrieren sind die Früchte eines jahrhundertelangen Emanzipationskampfes. Jedoch wird kritisch beleuchtet, dass die Frauen zu lange auf Bildung und demokratische Rechte gesetzt haben, und so zu spät die Wichtigkeit von Frauenkarrieren begriffen haben. In einem nächsten Schritt werden anhand von qualitativen Interviews die aktuellen weiblichen Karrieren im Kontext des gesellschaftlichen Wandels dargestellt. Die Fallbeispiele zeigen, wie vielfältig sich individuelle Frauenkarrieren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als Erfolgsgeschichte entwickelt haben. Außerdem wird thematisiert, wie die Selbstbestimmung sowie die Selbst- und Fremdausbeutung der Frauen immer komplexer wird.
