Pomeni besed in besednih zvez slovenskega jezika so v veliki meri slovaropisno prikazani v Slovarju slovenskega knjižnega jezika, ki je bil dokončan leta 1991 in z novejšim besedjem dopolnjen v drugi izdaji leta 2014. Pomenski opis danega jezika pa ni popoln, dokler ne omogoča pregleda nad sinonimi, tj. besedami in besednimi zvezami, ki so medsebojno v razmerju pomenske podobnosti in variantno ubesedujejo določeni pomen. Sinonimni slovar slovenskega jezika dopolnjuje pomenski opis slovenščine tako, da na 1292 straneh v 33 077 sinonimnih nizih prikazuje več kot 250 000 sinonimnih razmerij. Slovar prihaja k uporabnikom kot jezikovni priročnik, ki omogoča pomensko in zvrstno-stilno vrednotenje leksikalne izbire v slovenskem jeziku, bodisi pri ustvarjanju besedila, bodisi pri njegovem interpretiranju.

V obsežnem slovarju je večina najpomembnejših frazemov, ki se uporabljajo v slovenskem knjižnem jeziku, in sicer v vseh njegovih zvrsteh. Sestavljen je iz uvodnega in slovarskega dela. V uvodnem delu je na kratko pojasnjeno, kako je ta slovar nastajal, kako je zasnovan in kaj bomo našli v njem. V Slovarju slovenskih frazemov so frazeološki slovarski sestavki navedeni abecedno po besednih iztočnicah - sestavinah frazemov. Posamezni frazem je v slovarskem sestavku pojasnjen s sedmih v zasnovi pojasnjenih in komentiranih vidikov. Tu je treba poudariti pomembnost zadnjih treh, tj. ponazarjanje rabe frazemov s citati iz klasičnega listkovnega gradiva, po katerem sta bila npr. narejena Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika in Slovenski pravopis, in iz elektronskega besedilnega korpusa Nova beseda ter drugih spletnih, klasičnih in ustnih virov, dalje pojasnjevanje izvora, nastanka frazema ter navajanje pomensko ustreznih ali sorodnih frazemov v drugih evropskih jezikih. Podoben kompleksen pristop k razlaganju živalskih frazemov je avtor pred tem preizkusil v delu Živali v prispodobah 1, 2 (Celje 1996, 1998). Vsak frazem je v slovarskem sestavku zaradi ekonomike razložen samo pri glavni besedni iztočnici, pri drugih besednih iztočnicah pa je navedeno napotilo h glavni iztočnici. S sistemom kazalk je tako možno najti razlago frazema pri glavni iztočnici prek katerekoli polnopomenske sestavine frazema. Katere so te sestavine in kaj je glavna besedna iztočnica, je pojasnjeno v uvodnem delu. Kot projekt je Slovar slovenskih frazemov imel delovni naslov Frazeološki slovar slovenskega jezika. Pod tem naslovom je avtor leta 2003 izdal tudi poskusni zvezek.
