Excerpt from National Temperance Testimonial of One Thousand Guineas to Dr. Frederic Richard Lees: Report of the Presentation Soirees at Leeds and Bolton, January 26, and February 1, 1860 Samuel Porn, Esq., honorary secretary of the United Kingdom Alliance, on rising to second the resolution, was heartily applauded. He remarked that if there was any one thing about the resolution which he liked more than another, and which gave him more pleasure in seconding it, it was its clearness, distinctness, and per foot outspokenness. This meeting fully endorsed, not endorsed with half a heart, but fully endorsed the fundamental principles of Temperance, as expounded and advocated by Dr. Less; and then the resolution proceeded to define what these principles were. Strange enough, it so happened that he had never delivered a speech upon a political platform on this question where he had not advocated out and out the exact principles embodied in that proposition. Thlesolution not only said that they fully endorsed the fundamental principles of Temperance, but as expounded and advocated by Dr. Lees, not as sometimes said to be expounded and advocated and this was a necessary distinction, though he was ashamed to have to make it. It was impossible for a man to go forth with his hand set against the wrong and determined to do battle in accordance with the truth which was in him, without exciting a large amount of misrepresentation and contumely and scorn; but he knew no public man who had so much reason to complain of those who professed to be his friends, and the friends of the doctrine he taught, as Dr. Lees himself.
