Freeway Traffic Modelling And Control written by Antonella Ferrara and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This monograph provides an extended overview of modelling and control approaches for freeway traffic systems, moving from the early methods to the most recent scientific results and field implementations. The concepts of green traffic systems and smart mobility are addressed in the book, since a modern freeway traffic management system should be designed to be sustainable. Future perspectives on freeway traffic control are also analysed and discussed with reference to the most recent technological advancements The most widespread modelling and control techniques for freeway traffic systems are treated with mathematical rigour, but also discussed with reference to their performance assessment and to the expected impact of their practical usage in real traffic systems. In order to make the book accessible to readers of different backgrounds, some fundamental aspects of traffic theory as well as some basic control concepts, useful for better understanding the addressed topics, are provided in the book. This monograph can be used as a textbook for courses on transport engineering, traffic management and control. It is also addressed to experts working in traffic monitoring and control areas and to researchers, technicians and practitioners of both transportation and control engineering. The authors’ systematic vision of traffic modelling and control methods developed over decades makes the book a valuable survey resource for freeway traffic managers, freeway stakeholders and transportation public authorities with professional interests in freeway traffic systems. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Over the past decades environmental sustainability and mitigating congestion has been a significant challenge in urban areas in many countries. Freeway traffic management systems are aimed to improve traffic conditions by better managing existing freeway facilities. This dissertation presents an evaluation methodology that consists of series of statistical tests to identify the changes in flow-occupancy plot and flow breakdown on freeways. Two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to examine the statistical significance of changes in the overall flow-occupancy distribution. Curve-fitting techniques were used to produce before and after flow-occupancy fitted plots. In order to compare the fitted plots, statistical tests were presented to identify if slopes of fitted lines were statistically different. One challenge in creating traffic flow plots is the identification of critical occupancy. An automated procedure based on clustering techniques was presented to alleviate the modeler discretion from identifying the critical occupancy value. The impact of freeway traffic management systems on the probability of flow breakdown was also investigated. A non-parametric product-limit method and parametric Weibull distributions were used to model flow breakdown distributions. The applicability of presented methodologies for evaluating the freeway traffic management systems was illustrated using two case studies; a variable speed limit system in St. Louis, Missouri, and a freeway ramp metering system in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. The two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was illustrated to be useful in identifying the changes in before and after study of flow-occupancy distributions. Clustering techniques were successfully applied to partition traffic data to two regimes and to create flow-occupancy diagrams and to identify flow breakdown. Finally, an examination of the breakdown probability distribution highlighted its values as a more complete performance measure than capacity or critical occupancy.

This publication results from growing concern about increasing congestion on urban freeways. It provides an overview of proven traffic control techniques for reducing congestion and improving operations that will be of interest to highway administrators, legislators, and other public officials concerned with the management and operation of freeway systems. This synthesis of past and present practices describes operational and safety problems typical to an urban freeway corridor, a range of options for dealing with these problems, and guidelines for implementing and operating freeway control systems. The report is based on previous research, actual experience from operating freeway control systems in various parts of the United States, and numerous interviews with individuals having responsibility for those systems. General guidance is provided for the planning and implementation of freeway control projects at the executive and administrative levels.
