This book sheds light on the mechanisms of base politics that surround US overseas military bases, comparing several countries across different regions. Analysing cases from Japan, Greenland, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Singapore, the contributors paint a detailed and complex picture of the role and impact of US bases. In times of war they project military power, and in times of peace they deter the emergence of general and latent threats. Furthermore, they are used to secure access to resources, and as a means of politically and economically influencing small and mid-size countries. From the viewpoint of the countries that host them, military bases allow the host many benefits of the US security umbrella, but can cause internal problems, including accidents and noise pollution that accompany the functioning of a base, as well as constraining their own sovereignty. Military bases do not simply serve to bring America strategic and security benefits - as symbols of the hierarchical structure of the international system, they influence power relations in the entire world. This volume deals with the integration of modern China into processes of global exchange and cross-border interaction. The articles explore the broader theme in different ways and in different subfields, ranging from the history of political ideas to the history of institutions, from global migration of people to the transmigration of academic discourses. Focusing on modern as well as contemporary periods, the studies demonstrate that China in the course of the twentieth century became an ever more important nodal point in a complex set of worldwide networks and engagements. The integration into global networks, together with the global consciousness that corresponded with it, made possible significant connections transcending national borders. The essays also show that the effects could be homogenizing (or globalizing), but at the same time the growing interactions also produced opposition and fragmentation.

Heutzutage gilt der Ausländer häufig noch als der Fremde schlechthin. Das war nicht immer so. Am Beispiel der Stadt Köln im Übergang von der freien Reichsstadt zur französischen Herrschaft untersucht die vorliegende Studie die Ursprünge nationaler Ausgrenzung. Dabei wird den unterschiedlichen Kontexten nachgespürt, in denen Fremdheit thematisiert wurde. Köln ist ein besonders spannendes Beispiel dafür, wie Zugehörigkeiten über einen radikalen politischen Bruch hinweg modifiziert bzw. neu konstituiert wurden. Das Buch spannt einen weiten Bogen von der Einbürgerung-praxis über den Umgang mit sozialen und konfessionellen Minderheiten bis zur Integration auswärtiger Personen in die politische Elite. In der französischen Zeit kamen nationsbezogene Formen der Ausgrenzung hinzu, die anhand des Passwesens, der Wehrpflicht sowie der entstehenden Polizei beleuchtet werden. Die Studie leistet damit zugleich einen wertvollen Beitrag zur aktuellen Debatte um die Integration von Ausländern und den Umgang mit Migranten sowie zur historischen Nationalismusforschung.

Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie Bruno Latours kennt kein Konzept des Fremden. Dies mag irritierend erscheinen, bedenkt man, dass die Figur des Fremden eines der zentralen Schlüsselkonzepte der Soziologie darstellt. Von Simmel bis Schütz stehen Fremdheit und der Fremde stets im Spannungsverhältnis zum Eigenen, welches gerade in der Begegnung des Fremden besonders sichtbar wird. Mit Werkzeugen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie entwirft Edda Mack eine soziologische Denkweise, die das Theoretisieren selbst in den Mittelpunkt soziologischer Forschung stellt. Am Beispiel der Fluchtmigrationsforschung zeigt sie auf, dass eine solche Denkweise in ihrer Umsetzung nah bei den Dingen von Belang bleiben kann.
