Mit Diskriminierung ist eine Ungleichbehandlung gemeint, die den Gleichheitsgrundsatz verletzt. In der Annahme, dass sich MigrantInnen aus der Russischen Föderation einer gewissen Fremdenfeindlichkeit in Österreich ausgesetzt sehen, bestehen die Herausforderungen für sie darin, mit ihren konkreten Diskriminierungserfahrungen umzugehen und diese auf individuelle Weise zu bewältigen. Im Gegensatz zu vielen quantitativen Arbeiten, die vorwiegend auf den Arbeitsmarkt fokussieren, sollen in dieser qualitativ-interpretativen Studie die konkreten Diskriminierungserfahrungen der MigrantInnen untersucht werden, auch wenn diese außerhalb der Erwerbstätigkeit auftreten bzw. die Personen nicht erwerbstätig sind. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist das bessere Verständnis für die tiefere, individuelle Bedeutung der Diskriminierung, dem persönlichen Umgang mit Klischees und Stereotypen, der Offenlegung von konkreten Handlungsstrategien und Konsequenzen für die Betroffenen. Mit dieser Analyse wird eine Theorie generiert, die zum besseren Verständnis des Phänomens der Diskriminierung beiträgt und empirisch fundiert ist. Zur Datenerhebung dienten qualitativ-orientierte Interviews, die mit Hilfe der Grounded Theory analysiert wurden. Den interessierten LeserInnen werden in dieser Studie auch ein theoretischer Background, sowie methodische Details der Grounded Theory geboten.

This open access book deals with contestations “from below” of legal policies and implementation practices in asylum and deportation. Consequently, it covers three types of mobilization: solidarity protests against the deportation of refused asylum seekers, refugee activism campaigning for residence rights and inclusion, and restrictive protests against the reception of asylum seekers. By applying both a longitudinal analysis of protest events and a series of in-depth case studies in three immigration countries, this edited volume provides comparative insights into these three types of movement in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland over a time span of twenty-five years. Embedded in concepts of political change, limited state sovereignty, and migration control, the findings shed light on actors, repertoires, and the effects of protest activities. The contributions illustrate how local contexts, national political settings, issue specifics, and social ties lead to distinctly different forms of protest emergence, dynamics, and strategies. Additionally, they give a profound understanding of the mechanisms and constellations that contribute to protest success, both in terms of preventing deportations of individuals as well as changing policies. In sum, this book constitutes a major contribution to empirically informed theoretical reflections on collective contestation in the fields of refugee studies and social protest movements.

In many European countries the extreme right have refined their electoral programmes under the rubric of nationalist-populist slogans and have adopted subtle forms of racism. The move away from overt neo-fascist discourse has, allowed these parties to expand their electoral support as populist nationalist parties. Paradoxically, this has led to an increase in racist and anti-Semitic discourse. In this on-site analysis, Michal Krzyzanowski and Ruth Wodak describe a confluence of racism and xenophobia, and show how that union creates a new kind of racism. The "new" racism differs from the older kinds in that it is usually not expressed in overtly racial terms. Instead, the justifications that are typically employed concern protecting jobs, eliminating abuse of welfare benefits, or cultural incompatibilities. The new racism exploits xenophobia rooted in ethnocentrism, male chauvinism, and ordinary prejudices that are often unconscious or routinized. For these reasons, the new racism can be defined as "syncretic," a mixture of many, sometimes contradictory, racist and xenophobic beliefs and stereotypes. Racism as ideology and practice is alive and well. This important book aims to provide understanding of the many socio-political and historical processes involved in such expressions of institutional and individual racism--processes which are not necessarily evident from more overt or traditional expressions of racism. This is an innovative look at the political study of language as well as new instances of race, ethnicity, and class in present-day Europe.

The contributions to this volume Migration, Gender and Religion bring together empirically grounded and theoretically sophisticated case studies of populist responses to what are perceived to be the threats to national survival and sovereignty from ‘uncontrolled’ immigration. The demographic context – declining fertility rates and ageing populations – promotes the belief that high Muslim fertility rates are material evidence of an Islamic threat to the West, to national cohesion and particularly to the safety and dignity of the women of the host community. Consequently, gender plays an important part in populist ideology, but populist attitudes to gender are often contradictory. Populist movements are often marked by misogyny and by policies that are typically anti-feminist in rejecting gender equality. The traditional family with a dominant father and submissive mother is promoted as the basis of national values and the remedy against social decline. The obsession with women in the public domain points to a crisis of masculinity associated with unemployment, the impact of austerity packages on social status, and the growth of pink collar employment. Inevitably, religion is drawn into these political debates about the future of Western societies, because religion in general has seen the family and mothers as essential for the reproduction of religion. Christendom has been identified by populists as providing the ultimate defence of the borders of European civilisation against Islam, despite the fact that church leaders have often defended and welcomed outsiders in terms of Christian charity. Once more Christian Europe is the Abendland standing in defiance of a threatening and subversive Morgenland. This volume will be an invaluable reference for students and scholars in the field of political theory, political sociology and European Studies.
