We are so used to hearing about all the French words that are found in English and about how purist the French are about their language, that we don't realize how many English words have migrated into French. You'll be astonished by how many English words are used in French. French is inundated with them! Swamped with them! Most are native English words, but surprisingly, some were originally French words which moved into English long ago, evolved a different meaning, and then moved back to French with the new meaning as anglicismes. English words aren't always taken into French with the same spelling and usage as they have in our language. For example, you'll encounter le week-end, which has gained a hyphen, and le warning which doesn't mean "the warning" in a general sense, but specifically means the emergency lights or flashers on a car. Some words are specific to certain sports, like l'uppercut or le football, or to other activities, such as playing bridge, while other words which are general in English have only limited meanings in French. An example is le slice, which only refers to golf and tennis, and not to a slice of melon, for instance. Some words are so well integrated into French that the average Frenchman wouldn't be aware that they are words of English origin. At the other extreme are words that that same Frenchman would recognize immediately as English words even though he uses them without reflection (much as we would say ravioli and pizza are Italian words, or taco and tamale are Mexican Spanish words). All these words will be marked as anglicisme or mot anglais in a French dictionary like Le Petit Robert, and the use of some of them would be frowned on in formal speech or writing, but many are very widely used in normal casual speech. Remade in France: Anglicisms in the Lexicon and Morphology of French chronicles the current status of French Anglicisms, a popular topic in the history of the French language and a compelling example of the influence of global English. The abundant data come from primary sources-a large online newspaper corpus (for unofficial Anglicisms) and the dictionary (for official Anglicisms)-and secondary sources. This book examines the appearance and behavior of English items in the lexicon and morphology of French, and explains them in the context of French neology and lexical activity. The first phase of the latest contact period (1990-2015) has its own complex linguistic characterization, including a significant influx of nonce borrowings and very low frequency Anglicisms, heterogeneous and creative borrowing outcomes, and direct phraseological borrowing. This book is a counterargument to the well-known criticism that Anglicisms are lexical polluters. On the contrary, the use of Anglicisms requires the inventive application of complex linguistic rules, and the borrowing of Anglicisms into the French lexicon is convincing proof that language change is systematic. The findings bring novel interdisciplinary insights to the domains of borrowing in a non-bilingual contact setting; global English as a source of lexical creativity in the French lexicon; the phases, patterns and processes of integration of English loanwords; the morphology of borrowing; and computational corpus linguistics. The appended database is a snapshot of a synchronic period of linguistic contact and a useful lexicographic resource.

A Dictionary of European Anglicisms documents the spread of English in Europe. The present volume deals with the influence of the English lexis on other European languages in various fields of discourse, social attitudes towards this phenomenon and its reflections in recent lexicographical work. It contains some of the papers read at the conference Anglicisms in Europe 2006, which took place at the University of Regensburg, Germany. This study examines the frequency and distribution of anglicisms in written and spoken French using a corpus of over 100,000 words collected from two reality television shows and from blogs - data representing two varieties of French: Quebecois French (QC), and French from France (FR). The following research questions guided this study: (1) Which variety of French uses a higher total percentage of anglicisms? (2) Which language mode (written or oral) is characterized by a higher frequency of anglicisms? (3) How does the distribution of different anglicism categories (Wholesale, Direct Translations, Hybrids, and French Inventions and Modifications) compare across French language varieties? The results indicate that, overall, anglicisms tend to make up less than one percent of the corpus (0.99%) when using a token analysis, and 2.80% when analyzing anglicism types. Furthermore, of this total, the percentage of tokens/types in FR was 0.94% / 2.80%, while QC totaled 1.03% / 2.80%. Concerning language mode, anglicisms also appear to be equally frequent in the spoken (TV programs) and written (Internet blogs) corpora for both tokens and types. However, when taking language variety into consideration, FR uses a higher percentage of anglicisms in writing, while QC employs more anglicisms in spoken language. Finally, distribution results suggest that while FR and QC share the preference for anglicizing most frequently within the Wholesale and Hybrid categories, the two language varieties differ in the distribution of anglicisms among the Direct. Translation, and French Invention and Modification categories.
