Excerpt from The French Principia, Vol. 1 The following work has been compiled at the repeated request of numerous teachers who, finding the "Principia Latina" the easiest book for beginners in Latin, are anxious to obtain an equally elementary French work on the same plan. The main object of this book, as of the "Principia Latina," is to enable a beginner to acquire an accurate knowledge of the chief grammatical forms, to learn their usage by constructing simple sentences as soon as he commences the study of the language, and to accumulate gradually a stock of words useful in conversation as well as in reading. The grammatical forms are printed in conspicuous type and at full length, as no sound knowledge of the language can be acquired without the pupil being thoroughly familiar with these forms. It is the want of this sound grammatical training which is the chief objection to the systems of Ollendorff, Ahn, and similar works. But at the same time it is important that the pupil should be exercised from the first construction of sentences, so as to test by practical application the grammatical forms. No alterations have been made to meet the new conditions: history can never be wholly free from bias, but a history of France written or revised during such a crisis as the present would be so biassed as to lose its value. I may, however, be allowed to say how conscious I am that I have overstated the temperamental characteristics, and in particular the temperamental weaknesses, of the French. The truly remarkable way in which, under the present trial, France has purified herself of her traditional vices and developed virtues which were supposed to be quite alien to her character drives one to the conclusion, not only that the temperamental qualities of nations change more rapidly than we have been accustomed to think, but also that they are often only qualities which have been foisted on nations by noisy minorities. Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 1 That such a nation should have failed to find a competent En glish historian is strange, and the fact, I presume, is to be ascribed, not to the insular prejudices of English authors, among whom we naturally seek for one (for they have written of particular periods in the French annals both learnedly and well), but to the probable familiarity of the English reading public with the French histo rians themselves, whose labors, to those that' can read them, ren der any other attempts not only unnecessary, but presumptuous. But, if this may have been the case in England, it is certain that in this. Country, where we have no such general acquaintance with French literature, we need a history of France in the English lan guage. Now, as my studies had gradually led me over the whole field of French history, I came to conceive that I might perhaps turn the materials and the knowledge I had collected to some ao count in supplying this need.
