Excerpt from French Composition The author hopes these exercises will prove interesting. They aim to give to descriptions of French life and scenes the human touch too often lacking in composition texts. Entertainment cannot, however, be the main consideration. To be useful, exercises must be practical. The word practical, as used here, means this: Exercises must supply abundant practice in the use of all constructions which the pupil studies. It is futile, for instance, to make him study partitive articles, and then include only two or three partitives in the corresponding exercises. Only when such constructions are abundant can the pupil learn to apply his rules correctly. Each lesson contains three sections. Section A consists of detached sentences affording copious illustrative material. B and C are in connected prose, but abound in the constructions the pupil has been studying. C is somewhat more difficult than B and may be used either for additional practice, for alternate exercises, or for a second review course. In general it may be said that lessons can be readily divided, the order of sections changed, and the work otherwise adapted to the needs of the class. At the head of each lesson are given topics for grammatical study. No rules are printed, but subjects are assigned such as are treated in any good grammar. Excerpt from The Elements of French Composition In presenting this little manual to the teachers and students of French, the author is not venturing upon an untried innovation. The principles upon which it has been constructed have been submitted to the test of experience since the beginning of the year 1895, when the author, in collaboration with Professor Squair of Toronto, published a similar work for use in the High Schools and Colleges of Canada. Both that manual and the present one - which is an entirely new work - proceed from a recognition of the fact that the accurate translation of connected English prose into a living foreign language is an exceedingly delicate operation, and much more difficult than the immediate expression of one's own thoughts through a foreign medium. There is no doubt that, even at a comparatively early stage in the pupil's progress, this practice of translation, as distinguished from original composition, has its value, particularly in cultivating accuracy as regards grammatical form and discrimination in the use of terms. But the English to be translated must be of a decidedly simple order; otherwise the pupil is either discouraged by the amount of assistance he requires, or allowed, in his happy ignorance, to produce a rendering that can not fail to be barbarous and uncouth. And that this is especially the case with a language possessing the extreme precision of French, no one who has seriously attempted to master that speech will think of denying. Excerpt from Exercises in French Composition for Schools and Colleges Much attention is paid to idiomatic expressions, and repeti tion of important phrases is frequent. The selections need not be taken up in the order in which they are printed. The teacher is the best judge of the needs of his class. In Parts III and IV, for instance, the easy selec tions may be used with beginners, while for more advanced students they may be found suitable for sight translation. The English paraphrases are included in the english-french vocabulary, and may be used independently of the French text if the teacher so desires. The author would, however, strongly recommend a very careful study of the French text before beginning the translation of the paraphrases. Parts I and II, which are largely in dialogue form, are suit able for drill in conversation. The selections in French may also be used, by teachers who wish to reduce the translation of English into French to a minimum, for the purpose of hav ing the students write resumes of them in French, and for writing definitions of new words and idioms in French. In Part IV will be found a brief list of subjects for original composition. The teacher can easily add to this list, suiting the subjects and outlines to his needs. It is necessary to give the students an outline of the theme in order to prevent a too great use of words and phrases already familiar. It is pos sible to begin quite early with original composition, and it is a very useful and interesting change from the ordinary trans lation. In the Appendix has been added a number of lessons for the purpose of giving a brief review of the principal rules of syntax. Not finding any suitable French selection, the author has ventured to offer the original French of Part I, for which he bespeaks the indulgence of his fellow-teachers, - stet pro ratione voluntas.
