Zumeist wird dem Neuplatonismus eine politische Philosophie abgesprochen. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt anhand von Einzeluntersuchungen zu Plotin, Jamblich, Themistios und Kaiser Julian, dass Freundschaft der Zentralbegriff der neuplatonischen politischen Philosophie ist. Der neuplatonische Freundschaftsbegriff umfasst nicht nur wie in der klassischen antiken oder hellenistischen Philosophie alle Bereiche des politischen und sozialen Lebens, sondern ist ausgedehnt auf die Grundstruktur des Kosmos und die metaphysischen Prinzipien. Der politisch-soziale Freundschaftsbegriff ist eingebettet in die Metaphysik vom Hervorgang aus dem Einen und Guten und der Rückwendung zu diesem. Entsprechend kann man zwei Arten von politisch-sozialer Freundschaft unterscheiden: Die eine Art spielt sich zwischen den aus Leib und Seele zusammengesetzten Individuen in der politischen Sphäre ab; die andere beschreibt das Verhältnis zu anderen Menschen, insofern als sich das Individuum praktisch und theoretisch zu seinem Wesen, dem rationalen Seelenteil, verhält. Entsprechend gibt es zwei Arten von Politik, eine ‚Stadt der Götter‘ und eine ‚Stadt der Menschen‘, die beide - idealerweise - als Urbild und Abbild in Freundschaft aufeinander bezogen sind.

Gemäß dem Johannesevangelium macht Jesus seinen Jüngern ein Freundschaftsangebot, mittels dessen er zu verstehen geben will, wie Jüngerschaft nachösterlich verstanden, gestaltet und gelebt werden kann. Dabei bilden die Freundschaftsbeziehung zu Jesus Christus und seine vorausgehende Liebe die Bedingungsmöglichkeiten, um seinen Auftrag im eigenen Leben umzusetzen: "Dies ist mein Auftrag, dass ihr einander liebt, wie auch ich euch geliebt habe" (Joh 15,12).

This book engages with the work of Miskawayh, a formative Islamic Philosopher in the 11th century, who is acknowledged as the founder of Islamic Moral Philosophy. Miskawayh’s The Refinement of Character (Tahḏīb al-Aḫlāq) draws from both ancient Greek philosophical tradition and Islamic thought, highlighting the concepts he integrated into what he argued to be the moral core of Islam. This book pursues a comparative study by analyzing and outlining the inherent philosophical concerns of the Aristotelian concepts of Happiness, Justice and Friendship, which are then brought into conversation with Miskawayh’s own concepualizations of them. While Tahḏīb al-Aḫlāq is deeply influenced by Aristotle’s ethics, Miskawayh employs not only a Platonizing interpretation of Aristotelian philosophy, but also incorporates traditions of Islamic thought. The study therefore concludes that Miskawayh is merely a transmitter of ancient Greek philosophy, as shown by both his critical survey of the material available to him and his own critical contributions. Essentially, Miskawayh attempted to harmonize philosophical and religious concepts of knowledge, demonstrating the interlinking of what are perceived as—at times detrimentally—incompatible positions. Ufuk Topkara illustrates how Aristotle’s Ethics are integrated, modified and at times adjusted to the broader narrative of Islamic thought and how Miskawayh’s discourse, albeit philosophical in nature, remains religious in its outlook. Providing clear insight into Miskawayh’s work, this book is ideal for students and scholars of Islamic Philosophy and Muslim Theology.

Das Buch stellt eine Alternative zur gängigen Sicht der Entstehungsgeschichte des Deutschen Idealismus vor, indem eine spezielle Rezeption des Platonismus, wie sie in Tübingen am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts möglich war, als Ausgangspunkt der prinzipiellen Überlegungen der Tübinger Freunde nachgewiesen wird. Im Gegensatz zu den bewußtseins- und wissenschaftstheoretischen Rekonstruktionen der System-Sukzessionen (von Kant über Reinhold und Fichte zu Schelling und Hegel) wird hier der philosophische Ansatz der drei Tübinger aus dem Versuch erklärt, die platonische Prinzipienlehre (in ihrer neuplatonisch überarbeiteten Form) unter den Bedingungen der transzendentalen Wende Kants zu reformulieren.
