Since its emergence in 2018, the Fridays for Future movement (FFF) has grappled with issues of climate justice for current and future generations. This study connects FFF with discourses around the rights of children and young people, aiming to place young people's views at the centre of the research and shed light on this as-yet widely unresearched topic. Through qualitative research with young people involved in FFF, the study broaches topics such as intergenerational justice, civil disobedience and political participation rights. The results highlight the necessity of collective responsibility for the future of FFF, along with participants' wishes to be more included in the political debate.

Climate change is a major threat to our planet. Social organisations such as Fridays for Future are very committed to it. Fridays for Future is a movement that has been established by a 16-years old climate activist, Greta Thunberg. In order to fight for the climate, she keeps striking school every Friday. Recently she got a lot of attention worldwide. Students all over the world started to strike aswell and with it a new social movement has been established. Not everyone supports such movements. In my matura paper, I examined how different generations feel about this movement. To make this as authentic as possible, I created a survey in which people from 15 to >69 were asked. The aim of my survey was to find out which factors seem to have a big influence on the attitude towards Fridays for Future. I had a look at variables as media consumption, political orientation, age, income, degree and social environment. After an extensive analysis of the data received, one could then determine which factors had a significant impact on the attitude formed.

#FridaysForFuture is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every schoolday for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. She posted what she was doing on Instagram and Twitter and it soon went viral. On the 8th of September, Greta decided to continue striking every Friday until the Swedish policies provided a safe pathway well under 2-degree C, i.e. in line with the Paris agreement. The hashtags #FridaysForFuture and #Climatestrike spread and many students and adults began to protest outside of their parliaments and local city halls all over the world. This has also inspired the Belgium Thursday school strikes.

We study the impact of the "Fridays for Future" climate protest movement in Germany on citizen political behavior and explore possible mechanisms. Over the course of 2019, large crowds of young protesters, most below voting age, skipped school to demonstrate for rapid and far-reaching measures to mitigate climate change. Based on cell phone-based mobility data and hand-collected information on almost 4,000 climate protests, we first construct a novel county ×rally-specific measure of protest participation, allowing us to map out how engagement in the climate movement evolved spatially and temporally. Then, using a variety of empirical strategies to address the issue of nonrandom protest participation, we show that the local strength of the climate movement led to more Green Party votes in state-level and national-level elections during 2019 and thereafter. We provide evidence suggesting that three mechanisms were simultaneously at play: reverse intergenerational transmission of pro-environmental attitudes from children to parents, stronger climate-related social media presence by Green Party politicians, and increased coverage of environmental issues in local media. Together our results suggest that environmental protests by those too young to vote provides some of the impetus needed to push society towards overcoming the climate trap.
