Erich Müller-Gangloff war ein profilierter Wegbereiter für Versöhnung und Frieden im geteilten Nachkriegsdeutschland. Die Biographie dieses heute fast vergessenen Mannes zeichnet nicht nur die Entwicklungen in seinem Denken und Handeln nach, sondern bietet zugleich eine spannende Zeitreise durch die deutsche Geschichte des vorigen Jahrhunderts. Als Publizist und Leiter der von ihm gegründeten Evangelischen Akademie Berlin-Brandenburg nahm Erich Müller-Gangloff dezidiert Stellung zu zeitgeschichtlichen Problemen in Kirche und Gesellschaft. Gemeinsam mit Lothar Kreyssig gründete er 1957 die Aktionsgemeinschaft »Für die Hungernden« (heute »Aktionsgemeinschaft Solidarische Welt«) sowie die Friedensdienste »Aktion Sühnezeichen« (1958) und »Weltfriedensdienst« (1959). Seine Deutschland-politischen Schriften und Initiativen haben die neue Ostpolitik der Bundesrepublik in der 2. Hälfte der 1960er Jahre mit vorbereitet.

This important new book deals with the changing nature of war in the post-Cold War era and the emergence of new forms of warfare in which warlords, mercenaries and terrorists play an increasingly important role. In the modern era, warfare came to play a crucial role in the formation of states, whereas the new wars emerging at the beginning of the 21st century have mostly gone together with the failure or collapse of states. The author draws out the key shifts involved in this process: from symmetrical conflicts between states to asymmetrical global relationships of force; from national armies to increasingly private or commercial bands of warlords, child soldiers and mercenaries; from pitched battles to protracted conflicts in which there is often little fighting and most of the violence is directed against civilians. Changes in weapons technology have combined with complex economic factors to make the prospect of endlessly simmering wars a real danger in the years to come. Against this background, the author outlines the rise of a novel form of international terrorism, conceived more as a political method of communication than as an element in a military strategy. The resulting challenges faced by Western governments, and the costs and benefits associated with any response, are taken up in a concluding section that contrasts the characteristic European and American approaches and examines the implications for the future of international law. This book will be of important to students of political science, international relations, war and peace studies, conflict studies and peace studies. Seit der Nachkriegskrise der 1940er Jahre wird in Lateinamerika eine nur wenig beachtete kulturtheoretische Debatte über die Bedingungen von Ideentransfers geführt. Ausgehend von dieser bis heute andauernden Traditionslinie erhebt die Studie die Verknüpfung von Krise und Transfer zu einer zentralen Denkfigur und einem Modell kultureller Selbstbeschreibung in den Amerikas. Am Beispiel der in Buenos Aires von argentinischen und exilierten spanischen Intellektuellen herausgegebenen Ideenzeitschrift Realidad. Revista de Ideas (1947-1949) zeigt die Studie, wie im Zuge der kritischen Rezeption namhafter Intellektueller aus dem Globalen Norden (Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Arnold Toynbee etc.) transversal und disziplinübergreifend ein moderner Krisenbegriff geschärft wird und dabei gleichzeitig kulturelle Grenzregime an der Schnittstelle von Lokalität und Globalität, Peripherie und Zentrum, sowie Identität und Alterität neu verhandelt werden. Der Band versteht sich nicht nur als die erste systematische Analyse dieses bedeutenden kulturhistorischen Dokuments der Moderne, sondern auch als Miniaturansicht der medialen und materiellen Bedingungen einer global ausgerichteten Ideenhistoriographie für eine krisengeschüttelte Welt.
