Das Wittenberger Heiltum gehörte um 1520 zu den größten Reliquiensammlungen des römisch-deutschen Reiches. Durch seine Aufbewahrung in der Wittenberger Schlosskirche und seinen Sammler Friedrich den Weisen steht es in Verbindung mit Ereignissen der frühen Reformation. Außerdem sind die Holzschnitte des Heiltumsbuches aus der Werkstatt Lucas Cranachs des Älteren von kunsthistorischem Interesse. Die quellenbasierte Studie untersucht das Heiltum in seiner Entwicklung, die Reliquienerwerbungen, Sammlungssystematik und liturgische Verwendung der Reliquiare. Diese werden in den Kontext der persönlichen Frömmigkeit, sakralen Herrschaftsrepräsentation und Kirchenpolitik Friedrichs des Weisen eingeordnet. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Sammlung zentral für die Residenzfunktion Wittenbergs in den Jahren vor der Reformation war. [The Wittenberg Relics. Piety, Art and Politics between the Late Middle Ages and the Reformation] Around 1520, the Wittenberger Heiltum was one of the largest collections of relics in the Roman-German Empire. Through its preservation in the Wittenberg Castle Church and its collector Frederick the Wise, it is connected to events of the early Reformation. In addition, the woodcuts of the Heiltumbuch from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder are of interest for art history. This study refers to sources in its examination of the Heiltum in its development, relic acquisitions, collection system, and liturgical use of reliquaries. These are arranged in the context of Frederick the Wise's personal piety, sacral representation of power, and church policy. It thus becomes clear that the collection was central to the residential function of Wittenberg in the years prior to the Reformation.

This volume consists of essays that pose fundamental questions about the relation between verbal and visual hermeneutics, especially as relates to biblical culture. Exegesis, as theologians and historians of art, religion, and literature, have come increasingly to acknowledge, was neither solely textual nor aniconic; on the contrary, following from Scripture itself, which is replete with verbal images and rhetorical figures, exegesis has traditionally utilized visual devices of all kinds. Der bewährte Band von Heiko Augustinus Oberman wurde nach einem Vierteljahrhundert auf dem Stand der neuesten Forschung grundlegend neu bearbeitet. Alle Übersetzungen wurden überprüft und gegebenenfalls korrigiert, die Einleitungen neu verfasst und die bibliographischen Angaben aktualisiert. Die Quellenauswahl wurde zugunsten einer stärkeren Berücksichtigung der sozialhistorischen Entwicklungen verändert und im Bereich des konfessionellen Zeitalters ausgebaut. Auch Perspektiven der Geschlechtergeschichte und die Frage des christlichen Umgangs mit den Juden finden Berücksichtigung. Chronologisch fängt die Sammlung im unmittelbaren Vorfeld der Reformation, beim Streit um Reuchlins Stellungnahme zum Umgang mit den jüdischen Schriften und den daran anschließenden Dunkelmännerbriefen an. Der wesentliche Schwerpunkt liegt nach wie vor bei der Durchsetzungsphase der Reformation, wobei die theologiegeschichtlich wichtigen Texte Luthers, Zwinglis, Melanchthons, Karlstadts, Müntzers und anderer durch Zeugnisse der städtischen Reformation ergänzt werden. - Der zweite Hauptteil repräsentiert die Phase des konfessionellen Zeitalters anhand von Luthertum, Calvinismus, Katholizismus und Anglikanismus. Texte von Johann Gerhard finden dabei ebenso Berücksichtigung wie von Ignatius Loyola oder Johannes Calvin. Ein letzter kurzer Abschnitt gibt Einblick in die Geschichte des Dreißigjährigen Krieges und die damit verbundene Verehrung Gustav Adolfs von Schweden sowie in die Formulierungen des Westfälischen Friedens. Wer sich in gut lesbarem Deutsch aus erster Hand einen Überblick über die kirchenhistorisch wichtigen Geschehnisse zwischen 1500 und 1648 verschaffen will, kann getrost zu diesem Buch greifen.
