A real-life story of Emery Hinkhouse’s first-hand struggles during the Great Depression. He takes us on a ride through one of the most arduous journeys one can imagine. To survive, he learned how to butcher hogs, trap animals for their fur, do every kind of farm work, hook up work horses to a plow at the age of twelve, and plow a field with a one furrow plow, and make moonshine for the local sheriffs—the best in the county. He eventually joined FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps two different times and sent his money home so his family would not starve. He hiked down the road with ten dollars he borrowed from a friend to find work in Minnesota at the age of sixteen. His is a true story of perseverance and survival, and as he has been oft quoted saying, “Hard work never killed anyone. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”

Mount Andrews was a farming town outside of Clayton, Alabama, and a setting for “Dawn to Dusk,” a prose predicated on the memories of a young girl growing up in a country town on her grandmother’s farm. From 1935 to 1948 this is a credible story of my experience on how we were raised, worked on the farm, and “living off the land.” I tried to describe the land, house, what growing up on the farm was like and how farming was managed, and grandmother skills to raised crops, livestock, pigs, poultry, vegetable in the 30’s and 40’s with manual farm machinery. We were raised without a mother and father. Our mother deceased in 1932, leaving four small children. One son, and three daughters. Our grandmother, aunts, uncles help raised us. Our father deceased in 1956.

The book Suksuku Revisited . . . is a diverse collection of the stories, folk tales, and ma?umdla dza dza that the Bura people of Northeastern Nigeria use to transmit their cultural milieu, belief systems, and the supernatural to their youth. The book is permeated with how the tribe interacts with and is solely dependent upon the power and magnanimous symbiotic character of the creator, Hyel Ka?a (Grandpa/Ma God). This is most obvious in chapters 1, 7, and 9. At other times, the tribe uses animals to express those values and social mores they intend to pass on; these are reflected in chapters 6, 12, 14, 16, 17, 20, 22, 26, and 29. Social conflicts are often resolved through the supernatural or other arcane powers of the shaman, such as in chapters, 2, 8, 10, 24, 27, and 28. Suksuku Revisited . . . opens a doorwhich, until now, may have been closed to the outsiderinto the tribal thoughts of the Bura people with regard to their conception of creation, the supernatural, and the symbiotic relationship between the creator and his people.
