Excerpt from Gallipoli Diary, 1920, Vol. 2 of 2 11th July, 1915. Worked in my office from early morning till 12.45. The whole scheme for tomorrow's attack is cut and dried, according to our cloth: time tables fixed and every round counted. Freddy Stopford and his Staff turned up from Mudros. Stopford in very good form. The first thing he did was to deliver himself of a personal message from Lord K. He (Stopford) wrote it down, in the ante-room, the moment he left the presence and I may take it as being as good as verbatim. Here it is: - "Lord Kitchener told me to tell you he had no wish to interfere with the man on the spot, but from closely watching our actions here, as well as those of General French in Flanders, he is certain that the only way to make a real success of an attack is by surprise. Excerpt from Gallipoli Memories This first volume adds nothing of the least historical value to the literature of the war, though in succeeding volumes I hope to shed some light on the situation in Greece during 1916 and 1917, which obscure enough in any case, has been still further obscured by a mass of partisan writing on both sides. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XV EARLY DAYS AT ANZAC The position at Anzac is best described as a bite out of a biscuit. It was a rough semi-circle, the seashore forming the diameter and the trenches the circumference, while no part of the firing-line was much more than a mile from the beach, and on the right and left the flank trenches reached right down to the sea. The whole area was something under 700 acres. On the right, the trenches ran from low ground by the beach, gradually ascending till at Quinn's Post and Pope's Hill they must have been 300 feet above the sea. Working round to the left, the ground was higher still, culminating in Walker's Ridge--the most commanding feature of the position, whence a magnificent view could be obtained. Looking to the north, across the low scrubcovered hills, the village of Anafarta could be seen, its tall white mosque standing out conspicuously: beyond were the "W" hills and Suvla Ridge. Near the sea, the country was flatter and more open, and only a few hundred yards outside our lines were fields of poppies, whose brilliant scarlet added a pleasing splash of colour to the landscape. To the west, across the sea, lay the islands of Imbros and Samothrace. The sun used to set behind Samothrace with all the glory for which sunsets in the iEgean Sea are famous. The view from Walker's Ridge at sundown on a fine day was hard to beat: its peaceful beauty ought never to have been disturbed by the din of battle. Anzac would have been a splendid holiday resort in happier times, with its grand climate in the early summer months: fine golf links could be laid out along the stretch between the old position and Suvla Bay; there is good sea-fishing, too; and those rugged hills must surely contain some kinds of game, while the...

Excerpt from Gallipoli Diary In the kind and courteous letter which you will read on p. 15 General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston says that it is not possible for him to write a Preface to this book. That is my own and the readers great loss, for General HunterWeston, as is well known, commanded the 20th Division at the landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915, and during those early months of desperate fighting, until to the universal regret of all who served under him he became one of the victims of the sickness that began to ravage our ranks; and as one of the chief players of the great game that was there enacted, his comments would have been of supreme interest and would have added immeasurably to such small value as there may be in this Diary of one of the pawns in that same game. But since the player cannot, the pawn may perhaps be allowed to say a few words by way of comment on and explanation of the following pages. Towards the completion of the mobilization of the 29th Division in the Leamington area in early 1915, I heard secretly that the Division was bound for the Dardanelles at an early date, instead of for France as we had at first expected. By this I knew that in all probability the Division was destined to play a most romantic part in the Great War. Excerpt from Gallipoli Diary, Vol. 1 of 2 So much for the past. Whether these entries have not served their turn is now the question. They were written red-hot amidst tumult, but faintly now, and as in some far echo, sounds the battle-cry that once stopped the beating of thou sands of human hearts as it was borne out upon the night wind to the ships. Those dread shapes we saw through our periscopes are dust: the pestilence that walketh in darkness and the destruction that wasteth at noonday are already images of speech only the vastness of the stakes; the intensity of the effort and the grandeur of the sacrifice still stand out clearly when we, in dreams, behold the Dardanelles. Why not leave that shining impression as a martial cloak to cover the errors and vicissitudes of all the poor mortals who, in the words of Thucydides, dared beyond their strength, hazarded against their judgment, and in extremities were of an excellent hope? These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside With the Zionists in Gallipoli: Look inside the book: Had they been backed up at the time of the first landing on April 25th, 1915, by the 'incomparable 29th Division,' one of the best the British Army has ever seen, together with the two French Divisions, with their hundred celebrated .75 guns, and the Royal Naval Division, no Turkish troops at that time in the neighbourhood could for a moment have stood up against them, and with our grip once established on the Peninsula nothing could have shaken us off—not all the soldiers in the Ottoman Empire. ...Never since the days of Judas Maccabæus had such sights and sounds been seen and heard in a military camp; indeed, had that redoubtable General paid us a surprise visit, he might have imagined himself with his own legions, because here he would have found a great camp with the tents of the Children of Israel pitched round about; he would have heard the Hebrew tongue spoken on all sides, and seen a little host of the Sons of Judah drilling to the same words of command that he himself used to those gallant soldiers who so nobly fought against Rome under his banner; he would even have heard the54 plaintive soul-stirring music of the Maccabæan hymn chanted by the men as they marched through the camp.
