Excerpt from Gallipoli Memories This first volume adds nothing of the least historical value to the literature of the war, though in succeeding volumes I hope to shed some light on the situation in Greece during 1916 and 1917, which obscure enough in any case, has been still further obscured by a mass of partisan writing on both sides. Gallipoli written by John Masefield and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkey) categories.

Poet Laureate John Masefield's masterly description of the Gallipoli campaign was one of the first to tell of the events that made ANZAC soldiers famous all over the world. Easy to read and understand, the book places the reader squarely in the trenches and in the minds of the military strategists. When World War I began, poet John Masefield had joined the staff of a British hospital for French soldiers, serving briefly in 1915 as a hospital orderly, and later publishing his own account of his experiences. As he was old enough to be exempted from military service, Masefield then visited the United States on a three month lecture tour to collect information on the mood and views of Americans about the war in Europe. When he returned to England, he submitted a report to the British Foreign Office about the failure of the allied forces in the Dardanelles. As a result of that report, Masefield wrote Gallipoli. This book was an outstanding success, encouraging the British people and lifting them somewhat from the disappointment they had felt as a result of the Allied losses in the Dardanelles. Published when the terror of Gallipoli was fresh in people?s minds, John Masefield described what the common soldier had endured in that dreadful campaign. His book was written a few months after the Allied withdrawal and is a classic.

Excerpt from The New Zealanders at Gallipoli One last word: the New Zealanders have been feared by the enemy; in quarters they have made themselves beloved. Wherever they have been billeted, all the civilians say: We want to have them again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from With the Twenty-Ninth Division in Gallipoli: A Chaplain's Experiences; With Twenty-Six Illustrations and Two Maps I can only feel how inadequate the whole account is. So much more might be said which time and opportunity make it impossible to say. Some may appear to have been signalled out for special mention, while many others, whose deeds are equally worthy of record, are passed by with barely recognition. The limitations under which a diary kept in the midst of such rapidly occurring events must labour, must be the excuse. I can only hope that the relations and friends of those who took part in the campaign and who fell on the Peninsula, whether recorded or not, will feel that something, however little, has been done to their memory. Excerpt from Gallipoli Diary The Diary of a man who, like yourself, took part in the historic landing at Gallipoli, and was present on the Peninsula during the subsequent fighting, will, I know, be of interest to many besides myself. There are but few of us who, in those strenuous days, were able to keep diaries, and even fewer were those who had the gift of making of their daily entries a narrative that would be of interest to others. I should like to have time to write a Preface for this book of yours, giving the salient points, of our great adventure and the effect it had both on us and on the enemy. I should also have liked to have shown the influence that you and the Army Service Corps generally had on our operations by the successful manner in which you were able to keep the troops fed and supplied under circumstances of apparently insuperable difficulty. But being, as I am, in command of a big Army Corps on one of the most difficult parts of the Front, it is impossible for me to find any time for writing such a Preface. I can but wish your book the greatest success, and hope that it be widely read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from On Two Fronts: Being the Adventures of an Indian Mule Corps in France and Gallipoli This book has been written during a long period of enforced idleness. It makes no claim either to literary or historical merit, but is a plain tale of personal experiences in the War. Having been written almost entirely from memory, assisted only by the briefest of diaries, I fear that it must inevitably contain some inaccuracies for which I ask indulgence.
