From Here to Denmark: The Importance of Institutions for Good Governance represents the journey of developing nations from a state of poor governance - that manifests itself in various forms, such as lack of respect for rule of law, delay (and even denial) of justice, a capricious and corrupt ruling elite, lives deprived of basic human dignities and marked with fear and insecurity - to a state of good governance, reflected in predictability, accountability, and fairness in governance matters, and the strong presence of the rule of law. Drawing on experiences of some countries which have made the transition to 'Denmark' over time, the book identifies basic enablers which help a society to make the journey from here to Denmark. These are: building sufficient human capital (education and health) and enabling the effective participation by citizens in having a meaningful say in how they are governed.

Translator Edward Broadbridge joins forces with Grundtvig scholar Hans Raun Iversen in this biography of the most influential Dane in modern Denmark’s history. Grundtvig (1783-1872) was a pastor, pedagogue, poet, politician, and philosopher all rolled into one. Best known internationally for his concepts of a people’s (folk) high school, of ‘learning for life’ and of ‘lifelong learning’, in Denmark he is equally famous as the nation-builder and champion of ‘the common good’. This comprehensive, illustrated biography is supplemented by 70 letters tracing Grundtvig’s first-hand experiences in surprisingly honest terms, including his love life, his depressions, and his four trips to England. Edward Broadbridge was born in London but has lived most of his life in Denmark, where he has been awarded the Grundtvig Prize for his translations of Grundtvig’s hymns. Copenhagen University theologian Hans Raun Iversen has an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University and has written extensively on Grundtvig.

Denmark is primarily made up of one peninsula, Jutland (Jylland in Danish), and two islands, Sealand (SjA]lland) and Funen (Fyn). Sealand is the bigger of the two islands and also where Copenhagen, the capital and biggest city, is located. Denmark is the smallest of the three Scandinavian countries, with only 43,000 square km. There are over 400 islands in total but only 100 of them are inhabited. The country has 4.500 miles of coast line and you are never more than 30 miles from the sea, no matter where you are in the country. The biggest island in the world, Greenland, also belongs to Denmark, as do the Faroe Islands. If Greenland were to be included in the total area of the country, Denmark would be the biggest country in Europe by far and one of the biggest in the world. Denmark is perhaps the most popular of the three countries for campers. There are more than 500 campsites all over the country. The Danish word for inn is kro and if you see that word on a sign along the road, you have found the perfect combination of a place to stay and a place to eat. A long time ago, when people traveled by horse, it was decided that a kro should be placed every 20 km along all common roads in Denmark and, still today, you will find inns all over the country. They are as popular as ever for spending the night, grabbing a bite to eat, or both. Denmark is the number-one biking country of the three. Being a small and flat country, it's often the best way of getting around and biking is extremely popular for recreation. Denmark has over 6,200 miles of designated biking trails. These are just a few details covered in this comprehensive guide to all the activities in the country, plus where to stay and where to dine. This is an excerpt from our much larger guide to Scandinavia.

Bronze Age Settlement And Land Use In Thy Northwest Denmark Volume 1 2 written by Jens-Henrik Bech and has been published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-04 with History categories.

This two volume monograph about the region of Thy in the early Bronze Age provides a high resolution archaeological and ecological model of the organisation of landscape, settlements and households during the period 1500-1100 BC. Bordering the North Sea to the west, and the calmer waters of the Limfjord to the east, the region of Thy in Denmark experienced four centuries of intense economic and demographic expansion. By combining results from environmental and economic research (pollen and palaeo-botanical analyses) with intensive field surveys and excavations of farmsteads with exceptional preservation, it has been possible to open a window to the changes that transformed Bronze Age society and its environment during a few centuries of exceptional expansion and wealth consumption. The results from this interdisciplinary venture made it possible to link together the histories of local farmsteads with the wider regional and global history of the Bronze Age in North-western Europe during this period. Here is much to feed on for students and researchers of the Bronze Age alike.
