Manchester and Salford have a special place in the history of the British working class. They lay at the heart of the cotton industry, the spark of the industrial revolution, and as a consequence were among the first places to experience the application of steam power and the factory system to production. As a result, the Manchester-Salford conurbation was the first to see a fully-formed industrial working class. Whilst industrialization went through its heroic phase, the two cities seemed to be blazing a trail, not only for the rest of the country, but for the world. During the first half of the 19th century, social observers came from across Europe to see what they supposed to be their future. Manchester was, in Asa Briggs's influential phrase, the shock city of the age. The city demonstrated the ability of science to control nature: this was why, in 1843, Benjamin Disraeli described Manchester as the modern Athens. However, as Alexis de Tocqueville had noted eight years earlier, there was another side to increasing productivity -

Irish family history is not easy to pursue. This book took the author many years following the journey of his family from County Roscommon at the time of the Great Famine in the 1840s. They settled in Lancashire, became part of the Irish in Britain, while working as plasterers, house painters, and cotton weavers. We discover where they lived, how much they earnt, and how much rent they paid. As they assimilated into British society in the last century family members contributed in both world wars. In the Second World War we follow the fortunes of three cousins in each of the three services. The family name _ OÍCadhain in Irish _ translates as ïwildgooseÍ. Their roaming continued after 1945 with further migrations to Canada. As we discover from what happened to this one family of famine migrants there are plenty of surprises along the way.

'Women's talk' has been a widely noticed feature of working-class life throughout history, but it has not been the subject of much serious study. Melanie Tebbutt's thorough and wide-ranging examination of its history is long overdue. Gossip played a central role in the lives of working-class women, performing a variety of functions, particularly those associated with the sharing and support networks which underpinned life in poor districts. This sensitive and accessible examination of street conversations reveals the dynamics of women's relationships with family and neighbours, and records the changes in the role and meaning of gossip over a span of nearly one hundred years. It challenges the presumed importance of male talk, drawing on a wide range of textual and oral sources to rescue gossip from its usual pejorative associations. Its appeal to students of women's history is plain, but it will also interest and provoke social historians and social scientists by marshalling much evidence from contemporary sources to contradict some widely-held beliefs about community and other postwar myths.
