Combining approaches from art history, museum studies, and contemporary curating, this collection focuses on the artist's studio and its legacies. Through a series of case studies on some of the major figures of modern art, contributors examine how and why artists' studios have been exhibited in the art gallery and museum. Among the artists discussed are Donald Judd, Frieda Kahlo, Constantin Brancusi, Francis Bacon, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Piet Mondrian.

What inspiration awaits within a museum? In this rare venture, a group of 14 Resident Artists from The Clay Studio worked with 7 curators to explore the Philadelphia Museum of Art's art storage vaults. This catalog--and its accompanying exhibition at The Clay Studio--reveals the thoughts, inspirations, and creative drive shared by the artists and curators. After researching and handling artifacts in an art museum's storage, each artist chose a museum object and went back to their studio to create a new work of art in response. The resulting artworks, beautifully photographed here, are accompanied by the artists' thoughtful reactions to the experience, along with candid views of the works in progress in their studios. The curators, too, describe their "aha moments" in three luminous essays. For both artists and curators, this journey from storage to studio in Philadelphia has been revelatory and points the way to exciting future possibilities for artists, curators, museums, and gallery visitors everywhere.

Everyone who looks at contemporary art is familiar with galleries. But visual features of these mysterious temples tend to be taken for granted. The basic purpose of this book is to enliven the reader’s latent knowledge of galleries, including architectural motifs, the intended impression that is conveyed to the visitor, and human interactions within them. The contemporary art world system includes artists’ studios, art galleries, homes of collec-tors and public art museums. To comprehend art, one needs to understand these settings and how it travels through them. The contemporary art gallery is a store where luxury goods are sold. What distinguishes it from stores selling other luxuries – upscale clothing, jewelry, and posh cars – is the nature of the merchandise. While much has been written about the art, this book uncovers the secretive culture of the galleries themselves. The gallery is the public site where art is first seen – anyone can come and look for free. This store, a commercial site, is where aesthetic judgments are made. Art’s value is determined in this marketplace by the consensus formed by public opinion, professional re-viewers and sales. The gallery, then, is the nexus of the enigmatic, billion dollar art world, and it is that space that is dissected here. The first chapter briefly describes the beginnings of the present contemporary art gallery. The second presents the experience of gallery going, presenting summary accounts of vis-its to some contemporary galleries. The third expands and extends that analysis, with de-tailed close up descriptions and comparative evaluations of many diverse contemporary galleries, in order to identify the challenges provided by these marvelous places. Then the fourth chapter indicates why, in the near future, due to the proliferation of myriad art fairs and online platforms extant today, such galleries might disappear altogether.

Before The Museums Came written by Leo J. Harris and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-05 with Art categories.

Before the Museums Came: A Social History of the Fine Arts in the Twin Cities gives an engaging portrayal of the fine arts scene of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota in the United States, spanning from the appearance of the earliest artists in 1835 to the opening of the first permanent museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1915. Readers will learn about the institutions and organizations that were created in support of the fine arts, the early art exhibitions and events, and the collectors, dealers and artists whose efforts made all of that come to fruition. The text – enriched and supplemented by reproductions of artworks, photographs of various personages, exhibition venues, studios, art galleries, catalogues, and ephemera – presents a clear understanding of the period and breaks new ground for future scholars to research. Leo John Harris had pursued three different careers before retiring to follow yet another vocation, this time as a writer. He served in the U.S. Department of State and Foreign Service; he was an international lawyer; and he founded a niche publishing house devoted to books on the arts, history, and popularculture. In his retirement he has written articles and books on philately, the arts and regional history, and this passion has now resulted in a well-researched and richly illustrated publication.

Boxes, cabinets, chests, cupboards, desks, and sideboards--this volume showcases one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces designed and constructed by today's emerging and established furniture makers and artists. This exhibition catalog illustrates the many ways in which thirty-seven contemporary artists approach case furniture, a traditional form that is being constantly defined and redefined. This simultaneously utilitarian and aesthetic art form permits artists, from traditional to avant-garde, to express their own visions. Essayists and guest curators for the exhibition, Thomas Loeser and Virginia T. Boyd, present the artist's and scholar's perspectives on contemporary decorative arts and discuss the themes underlying the exhibition. An overview of the development of studio furniture over the past decade by decorative arts scholar Glenn Adamson provides a recent historical context for the pieces in the exhibition.
