Excerpt from The Morality of Nature A man now Of mature years, who began his reading when the epoch-making works Of Charles Robert Darwin were new books, has been privileged to share in a marvellous period Of human advancement. The new discoveries in those sciences which explore the prehistoric past of the world, and especially those which pertain to the progress Of life have promoted that central idea expressed by the word evolution from the status Of a theory to that Of an established principle - a necessary part of the educational equipment Of any thinking man. He who does not recognize evolution today is in the same class with those who do not believe that the earth is round. These are no longer questions to be argued, they are facts which are established in proofs so convincing that a little reading is all that is needed to make them clear. TO provide that little reading in regard to evolution is one of the purposes of this book. It is treated last because it is here only accessory to the chief arguments which precede it; but a reader who so desires may go over this explanation Of evolution first. It is broad and general rather than Of de tailed completeness. It will not satisfy the biologist any more than a landscape-painter's view of a forest scene would satisfy a botanist; but it has advantages nevertheless. The prime purpose of this work is the consideration Of Man as a participant in this great Evolution forward and upward. Excerpt from Parables From Nature: Second Series And the man, advanced in years and wisdom, passed forward along the deck, and left the youth speechless among his astonished companions. No explanation was given, and not another word of outward murmuring was heard. The ship went on her way; but whether that youth, after they emerged from the heavy oppression of the tropical calms, ever sought for the solution of the old man's statement, remains unknown. Excerpt from All the Year Round: A Nature Reader All Winter long Mother Nature had sent her winds to rock the babies' cradles. Back and forth they had rocked, lulling the baby buds to sleep. Mother Nature did not want them to waken, for Jack Frost was king outside. She feared that her babies would freeze. In the fall she had tucked them up snugly and given them a warm coverlet to keep out the cold. So the baby buds had slept soundly all Winter. At last it was time to awaken. Mother Nature sent her March Winds to rouse the little buds. There was another king of the air. The beautiful golden sun was king now. Mother Nature knew that the new king loved the babies. He would help them to grow large and strong. She told this king where the children were, and asked him to waken them. So one bright morning, the king sends down his warm rays. They tap on the brown covers; they send the sap up into the buds. Soon Mother Nature hears calls from the cradles. She looks and finds that her babies are stirring. How glad she is! Excerpt from The Heart of Nature, or the Quest for Natural Beauty I am conscious of having myself made most inadequate use of the splendid opportunities my travels afforded me of seeing the Beauty of Nature. So I am all the more anxious that those following after me should not, by like omission, commit the same sin against themselves and against our country. We owe it to ourselves and to mankind to give full rein to our instinctive love of Natural Beauty, and to train and refine every inclination and capacity we have for appreciating it till we are able to see all those finer glories of which we now discern only the first faint glow. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
