This report provides an update on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation Plus1 (REDD+) forest reference (emission) levels (FREL/FRLs) and REDD+ results submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and relevant developments under the Green Climate Fund concerningREDD+ results-based payments. It illustrates the choices countries have made when constructing their FREL/FRLs and areas for improvement identified during technical assessments. Such information can help countries to learn from each other.

REDD+ must be transformational. REDD+ requires broad institutional and governance reforms, such as tenure, decentralisation, and corruption control. These reforms will enable departures from business as usual, and involve communities and forest users in making and implementing policies that a ect them. Policies must go beyond forestry. REDD+ strategies must include policies outside the forestry sector narrowly de ned, such as agriculture and energy, and better coordinate across sectors to deal with non-forest drivers of deforestation and degradation. Performance-based payments are key, yet limited. Payments based on performance directly incentivise and compensate forest owners and users. But schemes such as payments for environmental services (PES) depend on conditions, such as secure tenure, solid carbon data and transparent governance, that are often lacking and take time to change. This constraint reinforces the need for broad institutional and policy reforms. We must learn from the past. Many approaches to REDD+ now being considered are similar to previous e orts to conserve and better manage forests, often with limited success. Taking on board lessons learned from past experience will improve the prospects of REDD+ e ectiveness. National circumstances and uncertainty must be factored in. Di erent country contexts will create a variety of REDD+ models with di erent institutional and policy mixes. Uncertainties about the shape of the future global REDD+ system, national readiness and political consensus require exibility and a phased approach to REDD+ implementation.

This infographic booklet shows what the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through both the REDD+/National Forest Monitoring teams and Mitigating Agriculture GHG Emissions Towards Wider Opportunities (MAGHG-2) project under the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme, provides to its member countries regarding the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) framework. It also presents experiences on the ground with examples from activities in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, and highlights useful resources.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 815 million people in the world today are chronically hungry. After declining for over a decade, in 2017 global hunger is on the rise again. According to this year’s estimates, the world must, by 2050, produce 49 percent more food than in 2012 as populations grow and diets change. At the same time, almost 80 percent of the poor live in rural areas where people depend on agriculture, fisheries or forestry as their main source of income and food. If temperatures continue to rise, then progress towards eradicating hunger and ensuring the sustainability of our natural-resource base to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be at risk. This publication presents FAO’s key messages on climate change and food security. It includes examples of FAO’s support to countries so they are better able to adapt to the impacts of climate change in the agricultural sectors. It also brings together FAO’s most up-to-date knowledge on climate change, including the tools and methodologies used to support countries’ climate commitments and action plans.

REDD+ (Reducing Emissions of greenhouse gases from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) is an important tool under the UNFCCC for incentivizing developing countries to adopt and scale up climate mitigation actions in the forest sector and for capturing and channeling the financial resources to do so. This Handbook eloquently examines the methodological guidance and emerging governance arrangements for REDD+, analysing how and to what extent it is embedded in the international legal framework. Organized coherently into five parts, contributions from legal experts, international relations scholars, climate change negotiators and activists explore the history and design of REDD+ in the UN climate regime, as well as linkages between REDD+ and other international agreements. The book also considers global governance for REDD+, its financial dimensions including markets and investment and future developments and legal challenges. Detailed analysis from a range of angles illustrates the interplay of international norms and institutions and maps out a legal research agenda for identifying best practice solutions. Shedding light on one of the most vibrant and fast-moving fields in international law, this comprehensive Handbook is essential reading for scholars of international law and international relations, policy makers in the area of climate change, REDD+ and land sector experts and NGOs.

Institutionalisation Of Forest Data written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and has been published by Food & Agriculture Org. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Over the past ten years, REDD+ countries have made substantial advances in developing and operationalizing their National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMS), to comply with measuring, reporting and verification (MRV) commitments for REDD+ under UNFCCC, as well as to provide better forest data to effectively support decision-making and domestic policies. In order to support developing countries in moving towards a more solid institutional setting, this paper provides a basis for understanding the importance of institutionalizing an NFMS within each country, particularly from a legal, financial and capacity-building perspective.

Integration of peatlands into land-use monitoring systems is central to the conservation of their carbon storage – be they conserved, degraded or restored. Healthy peatlands mitigate climate change, enhance adaptive capacity and maintain ecosystem services and biodiversity. Albeit peatlands are starting to receive a high level of attention and the scientific basis for their monitoring has quickly developed over the last few years. Robust and practical approaches and tools for developing and integrating peatland-monitoring into national monitoring and reporting frameworks is an important opportunity for countries to limit global warming to 2 °C.
