German history after the Reformation is often seen as a confusing period of political failures before the emergence of powerful states like Prussia give some coherence to the national story. The inability of Emperor Charles V to solve Germany's political and religious problems by 1558 seems to condemn the country to the chaos of the Thirty Years War and the subsequent partition of the Reich, or Holy Roman Empire, into virtually independent states until its final collapse in 1806. Peter H. Wilson's major new study: - Weaves insights from the latest research into a comprehensive account of German social, political and cultural development across two and a half centuries - Addresses fundamental questions, such as how the apparently fragile structure of the Reich survived the trauma of the Thirty Years War and why, despite gross social inequality, Germany did not experience mass French-style revolution - Provides a helpful glossary, detailed appendices and a guide to further reading to aid study

Napoleon's contribution to Germany's development was immense. Under his hegemony, the millennium-old Holy Roman Empire dissolved, paving the way for a new order. Nowhere was the transformation more profound than in the Rhineland. Based upon an extensive range of German and French archival sources, this book locates the Napoleonic episode in this region within a broader chronological framework, encompassing the Old Regime and Restoration. It analyses not only politics, but also culture, identity, religion, society, institutions and economics. It reassesses in turn the legacy bequeathed by the Old Regime, the struggle between Revolution and Counter-Revolution in the 1790s, Napoleon's attempts to integrate the German-speaking Rhineland into the French Empire, the transition to Prussian rule, and the subsequent struggles that ultimately helped determine whether Germany would follow its own Sonderweg or the path of its western neighbours.

The masterfully told story of what happened in Germany following its defeat in the first world war: the Kaiser’s exit from the stage, the sailors’ mutiny, the spreading of the revolution and its betrayal by its own chosen socialist leaders. Haffner recounts the murder of Karl Liebknecht and of Rosa Luxemburg — and the deliberate creation of those relentless counter-revolutionary forces that became the nightmare of the Third Reich. More than a brilliant historical study: it has vital lessons for our own day. “Haffner’s history of the revolution is unrivalled — tight, precise, passionately rational, brilliantly formulated.” — Profil/Wien “No-one else has described and analysed the events of 1918/19 that were decisive for the century as well and as convincingly as Sebastian Haffner.” — Tagespiegel “For Haffner, the revolution was a social-democratic revolution. That it was nevertheless ultimately suppressed bloodily by social-democratic politicians confirms Haffner’s suspicion that this was a case of betrayal.” — Norddeutscher Rundfunk(North German Radio) “Haffner’s book is one of the few that breaks open previously locked doors and shines a light on dark corners of our past.” — Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger “Sebastian Haffner’s brilliant intellect clarifies contrasts and similarities in situations, motivations and deeds and describes lucidly and dramatically the main lines of the complex developments from September 1918 to January 1919.” — Dieter Wunderlich “Those who know Haffner’s method of making the writing of history an inspection of the past motivated by the present, will appreciate this book.” — zitty/Berlin

A true account of Hitler's rise to power in Germany, from Pre-WWI Germany up to Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939. The book includes accounts of historical events including the reign of Otto von Bismarck, aspects of the Holy Roman Empire, events of WWI, Weimar Republic, formation of the Soviet Union, and other historical events of the era. Hitler's rise to power is chronicled from his early childhood to his enlistment in the German army during WWI, and his involvement with and takeover of the German National Socialist Workers' Party. Events such as 'The Night of the Long Knives' and 'Kristallnacht' are comprehensively covered as well. Adolf Hitler understood the power of perception, and specifically concerning the manner in which humans process such perceptions in our never-ending pursuit of contentment. Perceptions define who we are, our beliefs, our values, who we love and who we hate, and all within perceptual spatial proximity of others, and as such can be used to control us. The ability of government leaders to use this knowledge in creating a leadership environment that portends to support our definitions of contentment thus have the power of bohemian persuasion over us. Many government leaders will portend to support certain religious beliefs in order to attract support for their cause, which is no different than the manner in which Hitler operated. Under the proper circumstances, even the most faint of individuals can be compelled to commit acts of genocide, and the 2003 US invasion of Iraq is a prime example. For the more we humans condense our perceptual environment in terms of self-awareness, the more genocidal we become. This mere fact describes the ability of humans still today to discriminate against others in terms of race, culture, and even sex. For the more we condense our perceptions within our mind in terms of self-awareness, the more we reject exogenous perceptions or those perceptions deemed different from ourselves, and all in the name of contentment, which is the very basis of self-preservation. Hitler stated that beneath the desire to self-preserve, humanity will melt like snow in the March sun. Not only was that quote the final motivation for the writing of this book, but it also remains prophetically accurate today.
