Revolution in the Revolution? is a brilliant, pragmatic assessment of the situation in Latin America in the 1960s. First published in 1967, it became a controversial handbook for guerrilla warfare and revolution, read alongside Che’s own pamphlets, with which it can compete in terms of historical importance and insight to this day. Lucid and compelling, it spares no personage, no institution, and no concept, taking on not only Russian and Chinese strategies but Trotskyism as well. The year it was published, Debray was convicted of guerrilla activities in Bolivia and sentenced to thirty years in prison. He was released in 1970, following an international campaign, which included appeals by Jean-Paul Sartre, André Malraux, Charles de Gaulle and Pope Paul VI.

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was an American politician and academic who served as the 28th president of the United States. In this book, he discusses the growing unrest that led to the Russian Revolution. Though many people are aware of the more widespread conflicts that began in World War I, Wilson uses his political expertise to delve deeper into the topic of revolutions, using Russia as an example, and in doing so, he discusses how he believes society can move away from these events happening in the future.

Written by a 24-year-old Indonesian medical student turned military commander named Suhario Padmodiwiryo, alias "Hario Kecik",Revolution in the City of Heroes is an evocative first-hand account of the popular uprising in Surabaya. The book vividly portrays the chaotic swirl of events and the heady emotion of young people ready to sacrifice their lives for a great cause. Newly liberated from nearly four brutal years under Japanese control, the people of Indonesia faced great uncertainty in October 1945. As the British Army attempted to take control of the city of Surabaya, maintain order and deal with surrendered Japanese personnel, their actions were interpreted by the young residents of Surabaya as a plan to restore Dutch colonial rule. In response, the youth of the city took up arms and repelled the force sent to occupy the city. They then held off British reinforcements for two weeks, battling tanks and heavy artillery with nothing more than light weapons and sheer audacity. Though eventually defeated, Surabaya’s defenders had set the stage for Indonesia’s national revolution.

Excerpt from Russia in Revolution We have watched the early stages, and are about to witness the culmination, of a national movement that will probably loom as large in after history as do those which resulted in the establishment of the French Republic and the United States of America. Writing in mid-crisis (for the mind will not wait while events reach a complete development), of a subject so large and in some aspects so strange, one cannot hope to have attained perfect accuracy of detail or perspective. If rapidly written, however, this sketch of the causes, character, and course of the Russian Revolution represents a good many years of observation and study. Moreover, which much space has been given to a recital of personal experiences illustrating the quality of Russian manhood, the heroism of the revolutionary leaders, and the tragic nature of the struggle for freedom, it is hoped that these narratives will not obscure the fundamental argument that the Revolution is no mere clash of personalities, but is essentially the fulfilment of an irresistible economic process. 1989 was one of the great Years of Revolution in history, and it was also the anniversary of many famous revolutions. As the world commemorated the two hundredth anniversary of the French Revolution, startling changes were occuring in an Eastern Europe whose political map had been drawn in the aftermath of the Second World War, the revolutionary consequences of which could hardly be imagined at its outbreak fifty years before in 1939. Although few of us can have expected to see the revolutionary changes of 1989 in our lifetime, it remains to be seen whether history will judge all of the upheavals in Eastern Europe as 'revolutions', or whether some will be categorized in later centuries as 'revolts', 'coups', 'failed revolutions', or indeed 'counter-revolutions'. The distinguished contributors to this volume, published in the Wolfson College Lectures series, enjoy the advantage of historical perespective regarding past revolutions and counter-revolutions. Their papers present a wide-ranging analysis both of the concepts of revolution and counter-revolution, and of particular upheavals of vastly different character.
