"Millions of Russians are estimated to be addicted to illicit drugs. Despite the enforcement of a new drug policy, the government has not been successful in reducing the number of addicts. In 2009, 100,000 drug related deaths were reported. The Institute for Security and Development Policy has conducted a fact-finding trip to St. Petersburg to learn more about the Russian drug situation. During the stay, ISDP visited the community "New Life," who offers assistance to drug addicts"--Publisher's description.

Over the last one hundred years, the Russian pharmaceutical industry has undergone multiple dramatic transformations, which have taken place alongside tectonic political shifts in society associated with the rise and fall of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a post-Soviet order. Pharmapolitics in Russia argues that different versions of the Russian pharmaceutical industry took shape in a co-productive process, equally involving political ideologies and agendas, and technoscientific developments and constraints. Drawing on interviews, documents, literature, and media sources, Olga Zvonareva examines critical points in the history of the pharmaceutical industry in Russia. This includes the emergence of Soviet drug research and development, the short-lived neoliberal turn of the 1990s, and the ongoing efforts of the Russian government to boost local pharmaceutical innovation, which in turn produced a now widely shared vision of an independent and self-sufficient nation. The resulting industrial organizations and practices, she argues, came to embed and transmit particular imaginaries of the nation and its future.

The "eXile" is the controversial tabloid founded by Ames and Taibbi that "Rolling Stone" has called "cruel, caustic, and funny" and "a must-read." In the tradition of gonzo journalists like Hunter S. Thompson, the authors cover everything from decadent club scenes to the nation's collapsing political and economic systems--no one is spared. Illustrations.

Mixing Medicines written by Clare Griffin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Drugs categories.

"What the medicines of early modern Russia can tell us about scientific knowledge, global trade networks, and the long reach of colonialism. Early modern Russians preferred one method of treating the sick above all others: prescribing drugs. The Moscow court sourced pharmaceuticals from Asia, Africa, Western Europe, and the Americas, in addition to its own sprawling empire, to heal its ailing tsars. Mixing Medicines explores the dynamic and complex world of early modern Russian medical drugs, from its enthusiasm for newly imported American botanicals to its disgust at Western European medicines made from human corpses. Clare Griffin draws from detailed apothecary records to shed light on the early modern Russian Empire's role in the global trade in medical drugs. Chapters follow the trade and use of medical ingredients through networks that linked Moscow to Western Europe, Asia, and the Americas; the transformation of natural objects, such as botanicals and chemicals, into medicines; the documentation and translation of medical knowledge; and Western European influence on Russian medical practices. Looking beyond practitioners, texts, and ideas to consider how materials of medicine were used by one of the early modern world's major empires provides a novel account of the global history of early modern medicine. Mixing Medicines offers unique insight into how the dramatic reshaping of global trade touched the day-to-day lives of the people living in early modern Russia."--
